The Collector Village Pumpkin Festival will be held on Sunday, 5th May in the village of Collector, 40 minutes north of Canberra in NSW. This popular festival attracts crowds from all across the region, to experience this unique event and some good ol' country charm. This year will be the 16th year that this event has been running, with a whole host of family activities to enjoy all day long. If you like pumpkins, you're in luck - everything is pumpkin-related and I mean everything!
This family-friendly event will be held between 10am - 4pm and costs $10 for adults, $5 for concessions and ALL children under the age of 15 are free. The entry gate is cash only, so ensure you get cash out before you visit. If you ask any family in Canberra if they will be going, they are sure to say "Yes, we can't wait!"

If the thought of pumpkin gets you salivating, buy a cup of pumpkin soup and walk around the competition area to check out the range of pumpkin pies, pumpkin scones and baked items at the official Pumpkin Baking Competition. Also nearby will be the Pumpkin Crafts competition, with clever and cute crafts made from the humble pumpkin. See here for competition details.
One of the main attractions is also The Giant Pumpkin Competition, which has a $500 prize for the biggest pumpkin. Last year the prize went to Michael Kiernan from Captains Flat whose huge pumpkin weighed in at 271 kilograms, twice the weight of the previous year's winner.

There will also be over 100 market stalls, free kids activities, live music, wheel burrow races, pony rides, farming activities, local community stalls and pumpkin surprises at every turn. Get involved in this fun, community festival and try your hand at some of the competitions and activities, such as the Scarecrow Competition - where clothes and pumpkin heads are provided, you just need to put together your winning entry!
According to an article from the ABC in 2018, more than 16,000 people visited the festival and 350 litres of pumpkin soup was sold, to warm up the crowds from the inside. It is the ultimate winter foodie destination!

If you want a break from the pumpkins for a while, this year they will also be having Cow Milking Demonstrations, showing the process of milking a cow and then turning the milk into butter or cheese. There will be four demonstrations throughout the day to explain the process and to teach kids where milk comes from. See the Collector Village Pumpkin Festival Facebook for all the latest news and additions to the festival.

The Collector Village Pumpkin Festival is the main fundraising event for the small town of Collector. It helps raise money for community projects and brings the surrounding community together for one huge day. At the 2016 census, Collector and the surrounding district had a population of 313 people, so the influx of thousands of visitors for the one day is a real boost to the town. The town itself has seen some interesting events over the years, with bushrangers causing trouble at the local pub in the late 1800's - see here for details.
So take a road trip on Sunday, 5th May and get a slice of country life (and a slice of pumpkin pie!), which the kids will be talking about for weeks to come. The adults too will get a giggle out of all the pumpkin fun to be had...
