Do you have that place, somewhere in the city or in the country, which you love to head back to when you have a long weekend or annual holidays? A place that holds special memories that you will always cherish. There's something about these places that makes you feel at home, relaxed and like you can truly enjoy whatever break it is that you're having.
But if you've not found one of these idyllic places – here's one that comes recommended. Colhurst House Bed and Breakfast located in the heart of Mount Gambier. It's an outstanding two storey 1800's mansion with its own gardens set atop a hill. The view from certain windows is beautiful – overlooking the main streets of the city and the hills leading up to the Blue Lake are also visible in the distance. It's in a prime location, within walking distance of the main streets, restaurants, shops and town centre. The visitor's centre is a 5 minute drive as are supermarkets such as BigW and Coles.
Colhurst House provides a different theme for each room – the Black room, the White room, the Tartan room, and Colhurst suite. All are lavishly decorated, spotless and elegant. Each day (if you drink it) a fresh little bottle of wine is left, the water jug is refilled, toiletries are replenished, chocolates are left and the bed is made…what more could you want?! It's like being pampered by invisible fairies! The breakfast each day is exactly how you like it – whatever that may be! Eggs any way, toast, fruit salad, yoghurt, toast, baked beans, tomatoes, mushrooms, bacon, coffee, tea…by the end of a weekend stay, they'll have to roll you out the door! But with such a brilliant breakfast to start the day, lunch is not always a necessity which leaves more room for relaxing or sightseeing.
You can also leave notes for the lovely hostess on the fridge in the pantry area where you will also find numerous brochures and maps as well as coffee/tea and cake if you're peckish in the afternoon. There's a communal lounge area with magazines, lounges and a stereo should you wish to relax in style in the evenings. Each room has its own TV with Foxtel and ensuite complete with bath robes, clothes hamper and hair dryer.
The house is beautifully kept – lush gardens, cared-for rooms and hallways, clean windows and private driveway (though the parking area is tight if all rooms are occupied). This B&B is a beautiful setting for a romantic weekend away, a solo 'me-time' vacation or as a place to stay while on business. Mount Gambier itself is quiet – but with free bike hire, sink-holes to visit, the Blue Lake and walking trails, it's a relaxing and gentle place to refresh and unwind.
