Coldstream Brewery is a lovely, unique and unassuming restaurant and brewery located just off the Maroondah Highway in Coldstream, Victoria, which specialises in cider.

Coldstream opened in June 2007 and began brewing in January 2008 and is the brainchild and dream of 5 close friends, which has resulted in delicious food and a well stocked bar and locally brewed cider.

My party of 6 visited restaurant on a Sunday after pre booking for lunch. The restaurant is decorated beautifully with a wood based decor and lovely bay windows that let in the summer breeze.

The food can be described as modern Australian with Italian and Middle eastern influences and both vegetarian and items that have gluten free alternatives marked clearly on the menu.

Among our group we ordered crusty (gluten free) Turkish bread, house made dip, olive oil, and what they described as crunch that turned out to be a variety of delicious seeds. ($12, $15 -GF), Caprese pizza, which had a tomato base, roast cherry tomatoes, bocconcini cheese, basil, mozzarella on a gluten free base ($20), roast vegetable pizza with capsicum, zucchini, pumpkin, eggplant, mozzarella and Yarra valley Dairy Fetta on a gluten free base ($20) and smoked salmon pizza with smoked salmon, dill, roquette, crème fraiche, mozzarella on a regular base ($22).

We also ordered BBQ Cider Buffalo wings served with fat chips, beetroot salad and ranch dressing ($25), a house salad with a variety of greens and a herb yogurt dressing ($7.50) and finally special of the day - Salmon with a mango crust on herbed cous cous that was described as sweet with a hint of heat from the spices included in the marinade.

The meals were all well received, tasty with a good quantity of toppings on each pizza. The BBQ chicken was described as sticky and sweet and the fat chips large and soft in the middle while slightly crunchier on the outside. The gluten free Turkish bread was lovely although slightly salty but the crunch (seeds) and dip were fantastic.

The drinks menu was plentiful and among our group we sampled at pot of the Czech Pilsner (4.8%) ($5.50), which was fresh, crisp and clean and the Coldstream's own Crushed Apple Cider (5%) ( a Pot $5.50 and Pint $10). It was delicious in flavour neither sweet nor too tart and very easy to drink.

The menu also offered many non alcoholic options including mocktails, soft drinks, juice, very tasty coffee and tea.

Its also interesting to note that tours can be arranged to see the brewery itself, which may be next on my to do list!

The service was very friendly and the great-tasting food arrived quickly. A wonderful venue for a relaxed lunch or dinner.
