The Coffee Palace is the perfect breakfast/lunch spot located at 35 Ocean Street (the main drag), Victor Harbor. I was visiting with friends, and after taking in the local art galleries and op shops for books, we experienced the first signs of hunger pains. It was then we spotted The Coffee Palace, a bright, well presented eatery. Patrons were seated at outside tables and inside - it was a buzz with all tables taken. Odette, the hostess could see our dilemma, and assured us there would be a vacancy in about 20 minutes. We examined the menu and decided to return, which we did.
We were not wanting a heavy meal so we chose the Senior Combo (1/2 serve Soup or Salad plus 1/2 sandwich). This is a very popular meal in the US and Canada I was told by my friends, who had only just returned from their holiday in NYC, Memphis and New Orleans, and just love to eat/dine out.
The homemade soup of the day was cauliflower, potato, leak and fetta. The blending of the subtle flavours was divine. Two of us chose the Smoked Salmon with Horse Radish Cream sandwich while our friends decided on the Turkey Cucumber and Cranberry sandwich. The sandwiches had generous servings and were delightful.
Later in the day we returned and ordered the Coffee/Cake Special. My friends chose the Hummingbird Slice and I had the Pecan Pie. Barista, Sharon prepared our coffees; my friends enjoyed their cappuccinos and I, my macchiato. Our choices of cake were to our liking.
I must say something about the relaxing atmosphere of The Coffee Palace. The decor is bright, very clean and the various art pieces by local artists that decorate the walls are for sale. The music is a collection of 50s & 60s music. Yes, it's rock 'n' roll with some jazz music, but played at a volume that doesn't intrude and smother any chance of conversation.
The owners, Judy and Anthony Miller opened the Coffee Palace opened in mid 2011, next door to their Victor Harbor Hardware business and it has become very popular with local residents and visitors. For those interested, they also cater for functions.
Why? Delicious soups, sandwiches, deserts and drinks.
