I've made it to my life's goal - the old age pension. Now I write for fun. Hope you enjoy reading.

Retirement is a wonderful time. It's like living one long, long Saturday – if it got to Sunday you'd be starting to fret about work! I enjoy cruising the roads of the Redlands and beyond to where my fancy takes me. Then, when the urge calls, I pull over and enjoy a cup of coffee. Sometimes, please don't tell my wife, I also have a sweet slice or piece of cake.
I love finding new and interesting coffee shops but I also like returning to old favourites to enjoy their ambience, the view, the staff or all three. When the combination is right the result is a 'Comfortable Coffee'.
I have set out four of my comfortable coffee spots where I enjoy sipping flat whites and nibbling sweets. I'm afraid I can't say definitively if their coffees are 'the best' as I only drink flat white. However, I can say, they all have great flat whites.
2 Shot Espresso, at Shop 48/71 Cambridge Dr, Alexandra Hills (go around to the back entrance) is open seven days from 5am to 5pm but closed on public holidays.
2 Shots, Alexandra Hills has comfortable coffee because I can order, sit down and get an excellent flat white. The surroundings are not serene with cars and foot traffic passing constantly but, for such a busy little shop, the place is surprisingly relaxed. The general atmosphere is one of a village centre and conversation with the staff is always pleasant and cheery.
Sensual Indulgence Café, Shop 8b Ross Court, 197 Bloomfield St. Cleveland is part of the Sensual Group in the little shopping centre. The other parts of the group are, Sensual Health and Beauty and Sensual Couture. I guess you could do a grand slam if you wanted an excellent cup of coffee while you get a spray tan to match your new nightie!
The café has an American diner theme providing homemade meals, shakes, burgers, churros, crepes and waffles. The doors are open every day and on Friday and Saturday nights. I recently tried the $10 special of baked potato with chilli con carne; just lovely.
Sensual Indulgence Café has a comfortable coffee because when I order I can sit down on a comfy bench or chair, get an excellent flat white in surroundings of serenity resulting from the 1950s and 60s music piped throughout.
One warning for those people who only have kindness in their hearts – don't sit too close to the door; the Queensland Transport office is next door and watching the people leaving in tears after they fail their driving test may be upsetting to you!
The Espresso Bar, 1 High St, Victoria Point has a slightly split personality and scores big-time because you can sit in the café or the library to enjoy your coffee and cake.
If you choose to sit in the café or on the footpath the vehicular traffic is not a problem. There is an impenetrable barrier of trees and shrubs to hide the traffic. Try for a bucket chair on the footpath – sheer luxury!
Best of all though is to enjoy your coffee reading the latest magazines and chatting (very quietly of course) from the library side.
I'm not a coffee snob but I do know what I like and I really like the flat white from the Bakery. I can also get another of my great weaknesses – a cream filled apple turnover.
The Bakery is not meant to be anything other than a bakery. However, there are stools inside and tables and chairs outside to enjoy your coffee and apple turnover. The surroundings are quiet and non-intrusive considering you sit next to the road.
I hope this discussion of 'Comfortable Coffees' helps steer you coffee lovers towards seeking comfort as opposed to coffee perfection. In my view, life is too short to expect perfection when what we really need is to be comfortable.
