  • Code in 210 Minutes & Build Your Website with HTML & CSS - 26 November 2016 (10:30 am - 2:30pm)

    Frustrated with not knowing how to kickstart your business without a technical co-founder or employee?

    Are you paying thousands on websites and not sure where to cut costs?

    Or do you simply want to understand a language that you interact with every day?

    Code Change, a Brisbane coding school for professionals, students and everyone, is presenting a Code in 210 Minutes & Build Your Website with HTML & CSS workshop which will provide you with a fun and practical introduction to the world of web development.

    This one-day intermediate workshop is designed for everyday web users with little or no prior experience in programming. It is ideal for aspiring entrepreneurs, project managers and anyone else interested in learning the basics of HTML and CSS, which are the fundamental building blocks of webpages. In 180 minutes, you will learn to build your own website from scratch!

    At the end of the workshop, you will be able to:

  • Describe, in simple terms, how a web page is retrieved from a website and presented in a web browser

  • Install and operate the basic features of an advanced text editor.

  • List, describe and manipulate basic HTML tags and attributes in a HTML file.

  • List, describe and manipulate basic CSS selectors, properties and values in a CSS file.

  • Create a simple website with interlinked pages from scratch. Imagine building a site with your favourite recipes, cars or holiday destinations.

    The workshop will be hands-on and practical, with in-class exercises for each section covered. It will also be taught in a small group, ensuring each student receives personalised instruction and guidance.

    All are welcome to participate in this workshop but there are some requirements:

  • You must bring a working laptop with wireless capability and power cord.

  • Have the ability/permission to install software on the laptop.

  • Have the latest version of the Google Chrome browser which you can download here.

    10:30am to 2:30pm, with a 30 minute lunchbreak in between.

  • Automate Your Life & Analyse Data with Python Programming - 10 and 11 December 2016 (10:30am - 3:00pm)

    The interactive workshop series, entitled 'Automate Your Life & Analyse Data with Python Programming' is open to beginners who are looking to get started in programming, as well as those who are experienced in programming.

    Python is named after Monty Python and is used by a wide range of companies including NASA, Instagram and Google. It is easy to set up and learn, and is regarded as one of the most in-demand and highly paid programming skills.

    In this workshop series, you will be put on the fast track to honing both Python and data analysis skills You will have hands-on programming experience working with the Facebook API, read and manipulate data in JSON, learn to use Python libraries, write scripts and become familiar with Python data structures and concepts.

    Workshop 1: Taking back Your Facebook data with Python (10th December)

    Working with the Facebook API, we will take a look at the exciting things you can do with your data, including your:

    Photos

    Statuses

    Events

    Messages

    Timeline

    With Python:

    Workshop 2: Organising your photos and scripting with Python (11th December)

    Using photos from Facebook, as well as your own personal archives, we'll look at categorising, editing, and extracting useful information

    Working with the Python programming language, we will look at the exciting things you can do with your images, including:

    Basic scripting

    Photo editing and correction

    Filesystem organisation and manipulation

    Metadata analysis

  • Workshop 1: Saturday 10 December 2016 10:30am - 3:00pm. Meeting room 4A, State Library of Queensland, Stanley Place, South Brisbane QLD 4101

  • Workshop 2: Sunday 11 December, 10:30am - 3:00pm. Meeting room 4A, State Library of Queensland

    You can choose to participate in one or both workshops; no prior programming experience is required. However please note that the two workshops cover different topics in Python and it is highly recommended to take both to gain a more thorough understanding of the Python programming language.

    Prerequisites include:

  • A laptop running Windows / OSX / Linux

  • A Facebook account

  • Python and Pip installed (this will be addressed in the workshops also)
  • Both workshops will facilitated by two experienced instructors and held in a small class size, ensuring that students receive one on one guidance.

  • Excel in Excel: A Practical Intermediate Course in Microsoft Excel - 17 December 2016 (10:30am to 3pm)

    Microsoft Excel is one of the most powerful and important software applications ever made, used by millions of marketers, financiers, technologists and everyday users for anything from complex modelling to personal budgeting.

    In this intermediate course, students with a basic knowledge of Excel will learn all there is to know about conditional formatting, charts, tables, and functions.

    This course is ideal for anyone who is looking to enhance their skills with Excel as by the end of the workshop, students will be flying through sheets with large amounts of data, performing advanced functionalities and saving themselves hours of work!

    The workshop will cover:

  • View window

  • Data sorting

  • Autofill

  • Relative and absolute variance

  • Conditional formatting

  • Functions (SUMIFS, COUNTIFS, text functions, date and time functions and more)

  • Named cells and ranges

  • Tables

  • Charts

  • Export, import and print different file formats

  • Pivot tables

  • The workshop will be hands-on and practical, with in-class exercises for each section covered. It will also be taught in a small group, ensuring each student receives personalised instruction and guidance.

    All are welcome to participate in this workshop, however there are some prerequisites. Students should be familiar with the following Excel concepts:

  • Basic cell formatting

  • Understand how to write and edit formulas and enter data

  • Understand the concept of cell ranges

  • Basic maths calculations and order of operations

    Students should also bring a PC with Microsoft Excel 2013 (or above) pre-installed. Mac users are also welcome but please keep in mind that facilitators will be instructing from a PC version of Excel and certain shortcuts and functionalities will be different for the Mac version.

    When & Where: Saturday 17th December, 10:30am to 3pm at Meeting Room 4A at the State Library of Queensland. There will be a 10 minute break every hour (in total a 30 minute break) so that you can eat lunch or stretch your legs.
