While it may not be clear where the word cocktail originated, it's certainly easy to see why cocktails are so enduringly popular. A little bit exotic, and with names like Dirty Carpet Disco, Geisha Doll, Thai Dye and Purple Dayz, delicious Chambord cocktails are the order of the day in Sydney this October for Cocktail of the Month, part of the Crave Sydney International Food Festival.

Throughout the month of October Tom Cruise lookalikes (well, one lives in hope) and mixologists from 31 of Sydney's hottest bars and restaurants will be shaking, stirring, twisting, zesting, and infusing for your drinking pleasure. These maestros of the mixer have each been asked to create a special cocktail with Chambord - that glorious concoction of red and black raspberries, Madagascar vanilla, Moroccan citrus peel, honey, cognac and herbs and spices. Your cocktail will be served in elegant surroundings accompanied by a delectable canape that's been specially designed to match each cocktail. And all for only $20.

Who could resist Aphrodite's Bramble - a Chambord-infused mix of gin, citrus and mint - served with oysters and cucumber? Or Magdalena - Chambord, raspberries, vanilla vodka and limoncello - with a brandy snap cone filled with raspberry and lemon zest curd? Or Sake Surprise - Chambord, gin, Campari, sweet vermouth and yuzu sake - accompanied by seared scallops with chilli and coriander and Chambord vinaigrette?

Restaurants and bars from Circular Quay to Surry Hills and from the Rocks to Woolloomooloo are participating, and include gastronomic heavyweights such as Zeta Bar at Sydney Hilton, Manta Restaurant and Bar, Rockpool Bar and Grill, and Bar 100.

Pick an evening, grab some friends and take your tastebuds for a journey of discovery. A list of the participating restaurants and bars, together with full descriptions of their cocktails and canapes can be found here. Once you've satisfied your cocktail cravings you can vote for your favourite and go into the draw to win one of five $1000 vouchers to dine at Rockpool Bar and Grill. The winning bar will get $5000 for their trouble.

The way I see it there's only one real question. Can you wait until October? Me? I think I'll have to invent a reason to be in Sydney this October.
