When I need to stretch my legs away from the hustle and bustle of Sydney Road or feel like a picnic without the drama of driving for hours, I head to .

As you stroll around the reserve, there are pretty views of the lake and Merri creek. The planting is mostly natives, with quiet spots in which to enjoy the Reserve. It's on a sloping block, so you get a good workout and if you are a keen exerciser, there are also exercise equipment stations set up so you can work up a sweat while watching the flocks of water birds who make their home. The paths are wide and easy for prams and wheelchair access and there's parking on Lake Grove and Newlands Road.

At the bottom of the Reserve, right next to the lake, there are plenty of playgrounds and a pretty decent barbecue set up with public toilets nearby. On weekends, the main thing you have to worry about is getting one that's not being used, as the Reserve is the setting for numerous cultural festivals throughout the year and the Carols by Candlelight event put on by Moreland Council.

You can find some quirky public artworks dotted throughout the reserve, ranging from the weird flag waving guy statue at the top of the hill, to the giant ceramic fish head near one of the playgrounds, which is actually more fun than it sounds.

The Council has slowly been upgrading parts of the Reserve and now there's a really fun curved walkway under the main bridge into the park. I like riding my bike around the Reserve for a good day out.
