Who says a holiday needs to be expensive? Get rid of the pricey flights and accommodation and head down to Hillarys Boat Harbour for a fun stay-cation. For the same price as a boat cruise in Phuket, enjoy a boat cruise in Perth without the lengthy travel involved.

Don't have a full day to spare? If you are thinking of a short, fun activity you can enjoy with the family or a short sightseeing excursion and you are short on time, hop aboard Rottnest Fast Ferries' newest vessel the Voyager on a 1.5 hour coastal cruise along the beautiful Sunset Coast with a view of the Indian Ocean.

I boarded the vessel on a sunny Saturday afternoon and was impressed by the professional crew members and condition of the vessel – a perfect way to spend a lazy afternoon and a great way to entertain the kids.

It looked like there were others on the same wave length with a large number of families taking advantage of the gorgeous day to cruise like a millionaire. Everyone was keen to experience the thrill of travelling on a comfortable vessel at a tiny fraction of the price of actually owning it.

It was interesting having a look at familiar landmarks from a different point of view (looking inland instead of looking out towards the sea) as the boat glided south of Hillarys. The vessel will travel either south or north of Hillarys depending on the weather. The cruise includes a complimentary beer, wine or soft drink per person so you can enjoy a sip while you look out into the horizon with the wind blowing in your hair.

As the cruise departs on 12.30pm on Saturday, Sunday and Fridays during the school holidays, the cruise provides an optional add-on lunch – it costs $13 for fish and chips, $7 for kids fish and chips and $7 for kids nuggets and chips. I recommend the fish and chips as it was delicious and was the perfect accompaniment whilst enjoying the afternoon breeze outside the front of the ship.

If you have had enough of the sun, there are plenty of comfortable seats upstairs in the shade as well as air-conditioned seats inside the vessel with a television and tables available as well as a bar for more afternoon drinks.

The ferry terminal is located at Shop 56 Southside Drive at Hillarys Boat Harbour and parking is free at Hillarys Boat Harbour.

Prices are $30 for adults, $20 for children 4-12 years and free for children under 4. A family pass (2 adults and 2 children) cost $80. Bookings are required, book online on here. For group enquiries, call 61 08 9246 1039 or email [email protected]. If you would like to charter the whole boat for special events, give them a call to discuss options.
