Before tractors and motorbikes, farmers used horses and dogs to work the land. Once a year at
Avondale Discovery Farm you can again see them in action. Watch the cream of the crop - giant Clydesdale draft horses and the top competitors in the Great Southern Working Dog finals. Head there on June 24th to check it out.
Avondale Farm began on a land grant made to Capt. James Stirling in 1830. It was owned by several families before being used for Agricultural Department research, and is now a National Trust property. Still a working farm, it offers a great opportunity to learn about farming while enjoying a day in the country.
Visitors are free to explore the property, including the 1850 homestead, the stables built in 1890 and an agricultural machinery museum. Many of the vintage tractors will be working alongside the horse-drawn equipment.
Some of the working dogs competing on the day may go on to represent the state or the country at future championships.
A new feature this year is the hobbyhorse display and auction. Vote for the people's choice for a chance to win a $100 Toyworld voucher or stay for the auction and bid on your favourite.
The farm also features a self-drive tour, a nature trail and a farm animal nursery. A picnic area with free gas BBQs and an adventure playground is available, and food and drink will be offered for purchase.
Avondale Discovery Farm is on Waterhatch Road, 6 kms west of Beverley.
