Want to encourage your children to read more? Then head up to the Clunes Booktown for Kids Family Day .

Australia's only official Booktown, Clunes is hosting a children's Book Festival on Saturday 1st November 2014. Suitable for kids aged 5-12, Clunes Booktown for Kids is the inaugural event dedicated to children and inspired by the success of the annual Booktown Festival held in May each year.

Situated between Daylesford and Ballarat, just 90 minutes from Melbourne, Clunes is Victoria's first gold rush town. Its rich history has been incorporated into the festival. With an early 1900's theme, kids will be transported back to a time in history before vegemite, when crayons were just invented and the Great War shaped the Anzac tradition.

Children can participate in a range of workshops in a lively village atmosphere. From Anzac exhibitions, discovering lost trades (such as a blacksmith) to drawing and good old fashioned storytelling, there's an impressive array of activities on offer. With a line-up of prominent children's book authors, including Hazel Edwards, author of the ever popular 'There's a hippopotamus on my roof eating cake', you'll be able to meet the authors and hear their stories face to face. Other authors that will be attending include: Krista Bell, Mark Carthew, Ann James and many more.

Tickets can be pre-purchased online here for a discounted price of $20 per person, or $70 for a family pass (up to four people). Toddlers 4 and under are free.

Never heard of Clunes? Although it is a small town, it is well worth checking out. There are several café's as well as a gourmet greengrocer, butcher, deli, supermarket and wine shop, so if you're keen to venture out to the Booktown for Kids Festival, make a day of it or even a weekend away… There are several places to stay in Clunes and accommodation information can be found here .

With eight bookshops in the town, Clunes is a haven for writers and artists. It is the perfect location for getting lost in a world of imagination and storytelling. The upcoming festival is sure to keep the kids entertained and inspired to read.
