Tennis used to be all about wearing white. But pretty much everywhere I went at the Australian Open last night I was blinded by orange.
Looks like most tennis goers were beating the heat by adopting the drink Aperol, deliciously also called 'bottled Italian sunshine'.
This was my first ever Aperol Spritz, so now I totally get why this is the perfect summer drink. Nothing could be more thirst-quenching.
It is a glass filled with ice, and then equal parts of Italian Prosecco and Aperol are then poured over ice with a splash of soda water before finishing the zing with a thick slice of juicy orange.
Such a magical pick me up on a hot evening.
As well as being icy and slightly bubbly, there is the lovely smell of zesty orange with complex hints of herbal scents, harmonised with a touch of vanilla.
Drinking this refreshing mixture at the Australian Open was really special.
Club Aperol is just to your left as you enter through the Garden Square entrance (which is just near the Rod Laver Arena Tram Stop). You can't help but see the place as it is wickedly orange!
The white picket fence and garden makes it look like and exclusive members' only kind of place. But anyone can go in for a drink and lounge in the white outdoor club chairs under the bowers of flowers.
It's a great place to cool off between watching the matches and close to the large screen, where you can see what is is going on in the main arenas.
The intimate seating means you are likely to start chatting with the people next to you. We spoke to a young couple about all things Melbourne -- music, food, wineries and craft breweries. The area tends to attract those who enjoy the 'goodlife' to the hilt.
Or there is another place to get your Aperol spritz - Casa Aperol - Grand Slam Oval.
While the Australian Open finishes on Feb 2, it won't be your last chance to experience Club Aperol spritzes, as they are very much in vogue in Melbourne this summer.
Club Aperol will be popping up at
Riverland Bar from January 7 until March 31.
They have transformed Riverland Bar into an orange and white, tennis inspired heaven. Alongside the Aperol Spritz bar, you'll find giant games and perfect places to perch up with a refreshing Aperol cocktail.
There is also the enticing price of $12 Aperol Spritz all-day every day. And they do an Aperol Spritz Slushie! Summer just got a whole lot better.
They are also offering Italian food pairing from D.O.C with a feast of local Italian delicacies, including their porchetta rolls. For the menu

But there are special Aperol events all over Melbourne where you can get your orange sparkle on.
Here is a great list of Aperol events .
So what's so special about Aperol?
A little history goes a long way and this special drink goes back a 100 years to 1919. There was a rise of interest in pre-dinner drinks and two brothers, Luigi and Silvio Barbieri, wanted to create a new, lighter aperitif unique to Padua in Italy. Through experimentations they discovered a zing blend of 16 ingredients, including sweet and bitter oranges, gentian, rhubarb and a bunch of botanicals giving a unique orange colour and bittersweet taste. Its secret recipe has remained unchanged since it was created in 1919.
