A theatre adventure that has gone to the birds
heartBeast Vicious Theatre Ensemble present an interesting musical theatre production called CloudCUCKOOLand, with the world premiere season running from Thursday 14 February until Saturday 2 March, right here in Brisbane.

CloudCUCKOOLand is a karaoke musical, written & adapted by Michael Beh in conjunction with the heartBeast vicious theatre ensemble, and described as a "bold reimagining of Aristophane's ancient Greek comedy, The Birds". Wikipedia says the term Cloud Cuckoo Land "refers to an unrealistically idealistic state where everything is perfect ... [and] hints that the person referred to is na´ve, unaware of reality or deranged in holding such an optimistic belief." I'm sure we've all used this term before. I know I have.

Set in a karaoke bar, CloudCUCKOOLand has a menagerie of characters including an ultra fashionable club owner, a cougar who sings country and western (aptly named Jolene), an ex-soldier searching for the meaning of life, a faded soapie actress, a temptress, a god, and an angel, and the plot is inspired by the real stories of local karaoke singers. With performances of timeless classics and hit songs ranging from Johnny Cash and Peggy Lee to Tom Jones, Carly Simon, Stevie Nicks, Spandau Ballet, Chris Isaak, Robbie Williams, Evanescence, Snow Patrol and the winner of the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest Euphoria by Loreen, I reckon it's going to be very, very entertaining.

The season runs as follows:
Thursday 14 February - 7.30pm - Preview night, all tickets at concession price
Friday 15 February - 7.30 pm - Opening night
Saturday 16 February - 7.30pm
Sunday 17 February - 6.30pm
Thursday 21 February - 7.30pm
Friday 22 February - 7.30pm
Saturday 23 February - 7.30pm
Sunday 24 February - 6.30pm
Thursday 28 February - 7.30pm
Friday 1 March - 7.30pm
Saturday 2 March - 7.30pm - Closing night

With cabaret tables, you can grab a drink before the show and enjoy it in the theatre; which is my favourite way of appreciating this type of performance. CloudCUCKOOLand is dedicated to founding ensemble member, Selina Kadell, and her family. Performances will not contain any nudity or offensive language, are considered suitable for young people over the age of 13, and wheelchair access is available at the theatre. Tickets are available from qtix here.
