If you need any information about Cloncurry and surrounding areas, fun activities and other great things to see and do around Cloncurry Shire, is a place to visit. is located on McIlwraith Street Cloncurry.



You can reach Cloncurry about 1,704 km north-west of Brisbane via Longreach, 784 km west of Townsville, or 125 km east of Mount Isa. The explorer, Robert O'Hara Burke (he was famous with his expedition with William John Wills to cross the Australian continent in 1860) was the man who named this town after his cousin Lady Elizabeth Cloncurry of County Galway in Ireland.



There are two parts of this museum, an outdoor museum and an inside museum. You can see the outdoor machinery display, such as a McLaren traction engine, farm and mining machinery and also a unique 1941 Ford V8 Rail Ambulance that was used when the road was impassable and did its duty from 1956 until 1971.



The other part of the museum is located inside the museum building showcasing memorabilia on Cloncurry and the surrounding district, including one of Australia's most comprehensive gem and mineral collections, historical collections, photographs and Indigenous artefacts. You can also see the breastplate once worn by George, King of Friezland. However, the star exhibit of the museum is Robert O'Hara Burke's (Burke and Wills explorers) water bottle, along with the history and photographs of their expedition. There are some interactive displays that will engage visitors, including children. There is also a corner called "Little Diggers and Noisy Miners" - a special place for little ones to do some activities.





The also provides tourist information such as brochures and maps, fossickers licenses, and light refreshments. They also carry a wide range of souvenirs, gift ideas, postcards and Cloncurry t-shirts and other Cloncurry merchandise.





The is part of Mary Kathleen Memorial Park that also features some public amenities such as a children playground, a lovely picnic and free barbecue area and public toilets. Plenty of space for parking including a camper van. You can also follow the path to a scenic lookout with spectacular views of Cloncurry just behind the museum.



During opening times, which is from 8.30am until 4.30pm all day all through the year, the accredited staff can provide you with all the local information that you need.
