Screening from 21 February to 8 March 2019 the Transitions Film Festival returns to Cinema Nova , 380 Lygon St, Carlton for the 8th year, featuring inspiring films filled with cutting-edge ideas from around the world. We are living in an era that could very well define the fate of our planet and the human race. It's a time of importance, a time to be engaged, educated and inspired. No one does it better than TFF to open our eyes to what's going on around the globe. Amongst the enthralling lineup of powerful films, the subject of climate change is especially explored in the following screenings

THE HUMAN ELEMENT

Travel with internationally renown photographer James Balog who has seen how climate change is impacting everything that shapes our life on earth. In his four decades as a photographer and explorer, his interest has been the complex connection between humans and nature. He's witnessing how rapidly the environment is changing, in the history of the planet. This documentary is presented at a human level that we can all relate to personally and emotionally.

Balog visits Tangier Island, a fishing community in the Chesapeake Bay where the community are experiencing the rise of the sea level that threatens the island's future. Meet a family in Denver, Colorado, all suffering from asthma; the children having to attend a special school with a hospital on campus for children struggling with air. Can we be the 5th element that can bring the whole system back into balance?

POINT OF NO RETURN
Go behind the headlines of the first ever solar-powered flight around the world. It took two courageous pilots who were not just trying to make history, but trying to inspire a revolution to solve the biggest environmental threat we have ever faced as humans. What will it take? This documentary explores what it takes to do something groundbreaking on a journey that captivated people around the world. Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg did the impossible by building a solar-powered aeroplane capable of flying day and night, and tested their endurance like no other in history.

METAMORPHOSIS
A documentary that captures the true scale of our global environmental crisis. Between forest fires, vanishing species, collapsing ecosystems and a race that extracts resources faster than it can be replenished has created a machine capable of destroying life. Like the old saying, necessity is the mother of invention, our crisis has given us the opportunity for transformation. Weave through stories of creativity and reinvention as a bold new vision for humanity and the world is presented in the loss of one world, and the birth of another.

THE RADICALS

Unlikely radicals, a group of professional snowboarders and surfers journey across the West Coast of British Columbia. They uncover critical social issues and inspirational stories of the resilience of the human spirit against a backdrop of visually stunning sports photography. Each community they meet teaches these athletes and gives them insight into what it means to be a true radical. This is a journey that challenges their relationship to the land, and those who call it home.

ACCELERATE

Bill McKibben did not enter Australia quietly. One of the world's most internationally recognised environmentalist, he demands that our government, businesses and communities accelerate climate action. Visiting 5 states in 8 days, he saw first hand the deterioration of our Great Barrier Reef caused by ocean warming. Visiting the heart of the world's biggest coal export port in Newcastle, he met with union and government officials, and also saw some of the low carbon solution projects underway in Adelaide. His message is clear. Stop all new fossil fuel projects, switch to 100% renewable energy, and not to spend a dollar more on dirty energy.
