I am always looking out for new experiences, wherever I may find myself.

One of the most interesting things I learned about Kangaroo Island on my recent trip there was that it's home to the only pure strain of Ligurian bee in the world. With this knowledge I made sure to visit a honey farm to taste some some of its produce, if only for the sake of it, and so off to Cliffords Honey Farm I went.

After visiting the Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Oil Distillery with its guided tours, and the Marron Cafe with its tubs of marron, I was a little bit disappointed when I arrived at the farm to find it doesn't offer too much insight into its behind-the-scenes action. The place is more about buying products than seeing or learning about the bees. It is possible for large groups to book a guided tour though.

The process of extracting honey can be learned about from a video in a back room however. The walls of this room are also covered with posters full of information on bees if you're willing to read them. There's even a range of artworks to take a look at.

A glass beehive extends from one of the walls. It's quite slim but is swarming with bees.

The shop is the focus of Clifford's Honey Farm however. It was opened 1993 and has helped turn the once fledgling honey farm into one with 300 honey-producing hives.

The shop is full of products, both made from honey and from other regional produce. It's here that you get a chance to taste some of the different types of honey that get produced at Clifford's. It's also the only chance you'll ever have of tasting honey ice-cream. The type of products you'll see can be found here, and you can get them online if they look particularly appealing.

It's not just honey on sale here

To ensure your family doesn't get all sticky on the ride home in the car, there is a picnic area for visitors to enjoy their purchases. It even has play equipment.

Clifford's Honey Farm is located in the middle of Kangaroo Island, just west of the narrow neck that separates the Dudley Peninsula (where you'll find Penneshaw) from the rest.
