Although there is no official documentation, correspondence suggests that the popular Cleveland Bowls Club was formed in 1941 with two greens and a machinery shed built over a three year period. An additional green was constructed in the early 1980s as well as an extension to the clubhouse.
Eighty years on, this club is a social hub to those who participate in competition bowls, social bowls or the more casual, family orientated Barefoot Bowls. It is a haven for casual dining, functions, live music, trivia nights and simply for social interaction and entertainment.
The weekend of the 18th and 19th of September will be the centrepiece of the club's anniversary celebrations with a $10 breakfast special and lawn bowls demonstrations.
Saturday is Market Day with art and craft stalls as well as fresh produce available for sale. There will be a sausage sizzle throughout the day and live music from 6pm which you can enjoy over dinner.
Lawn Bowls is believed to date back 7000 years and for many years, the game has been considered a sport for retirees because of its relaxed pace and comparatively light physical demands (and as my dear old Dad would say, "because you could have a beer at every end.")
These days much younger players are passionate about the sport particularly since its admission to the Commonwealth Games agenda. Did you know that Lawn Bowls is also a school sport?
This weekend of celebratory fun indicates that this is a strong club with a keen interest in the game and its members. I for one will be heading down for a Pig on a Blanket on Saturday to the Cleveland Bowls Club at 164 Middle Street, Cleveland.
