In 1855, Clayton Chapel was built on a commanding site at the corner of The Parade and Portrush Road. The stone and brick church served its congregation well for almost 30 years before becoming too small as a result of rapid growth. A larger church was needed and the decision was made to construct this 560-seater building in front of the existing chapel.
With its 38-metre-high steeple, Clayton Congregational Church was finally opened on the 17th of May 1883. The imposing building has beautiful stained-glass windows and a J.E. Dodd pipe organ. On the spire is a relief sculpture depicting 'Christ being presented at the temple' carved by master sculptor William J. Maxwell. A historic cemetery can also be found on site.
Clayton Wesley Uniting Church (as it is known today) can be found at 280 Portrush Road in Beulah Park. It is open to the public each year during
South Australia's History Festival . Do look out for the dates of its open day if you're interested in learning more about this notable and well-known landmark church.
