Where's the Best Place to Find Classic Winter Wardrobe Essentials For Women?

Winter sneaks up on us without warning. All of a sudden we are standing there, freezing and inappropriate. Now I'm no fashion expert, but I like to think that I know a thing or two. The reason? I'm insanely addicted to fashion blogs.

What I have learnt from years of gossip and fashion magazine research, is that it really isn't that hard to be prepared.
The great thing about winter is that your essentials will usually last you this winter, and winters to come. So if you've got the basics, you'll always be prepared for the wild winter days. And you may even have some of them already.

Firstly, I would like to say that anyone can look good. The working mother, the busy executive. It doesn't take five hours every morning. If you've got those wardrobe essentials on hand, you can piece them together with ease before you start your day, be rugged up and warm, and not look like a rolled up sleeping bag. The key is to know how to work with the pieces you have.

An easy and convenient way to shop these days is online. And one of my favourites is Westfield. We've all got a Westfield shopping mall of our own in each state of Australia, and now in just a few clicks, you can purchase what you're after.
All of the following will be linked to a Westfield store in which you can find these goodies (if you don't own them already).

Winter Wardrobe Essential 1 - Black Stockings / tights with a high denier rating:

It's not too confusing. Denier simply means the thickness of the tights. It is stated by numbers between 3 and 100, 3 being the lowest and thinnest, and 100 obviously being the thickest you can get (and warmest).

It's a good idea to get yourself a pair of 100 denier black stockings or tights, like the below, available at Westfield online here. And I'll tell you why.

It's much harder for them to ladder, so they'll last you throughout most of winter. They're cheap, they're warm, and most importantly, allow you to wear your summer dresses, so half of your wardrobe isn't forgotten once the cold months creep up.

You know that amazing dress you got at the end of summer that unfortunately only got one wear? You can wear it with a pair of your black tights. Just add a cute jacket and scarf and you're set.

And by the way, I say black as your essential colour because it goes with everything. But feel free to mix it up with a pair of navy blue wool tights, or in fact any colour of the rainbow. Block colours are very in right now so really, you can get away with almost anything.

You can purchase these Omsa Colonel Collant Tights on sale from here.

Winter Wardrobe Essential 2 - A GOOD pair of Jeans:
By good, I mean a pair of jeans that don't stretch after half an hour of wear. A pair that you don't have to constantly check the fly. A pair that don't result in you walking like a stiff-legged zombie.

I have always had a hard time finding a pair of jeans I felt comfortable in. Until I found Bardot. They have these magical jeans called Jeggings.

Now, I know a lot of people are put off by Jeggings, you know, jeans crossed with leggings. So was I.

But the Bardot versions actually look amazing. Exactly like jeans. They don't have that fake cheap stitching either, it's as if they have taken a regular pair of jeans, and added something super stretchy to the lining.

So what you've got are some super warm jeans, that you can stretch in, run in, cartwheel in, whatever you like.

I wear mine most days, teamed with a winter coat, blouse and scarf. The great thing about these also is, because they are quite tight, like tights, you can slip knee high or over the knee boots on top without force. These jeans are priced at around $130, but are absolutely worth every cent.

These Viper Jeggings can be purchased at Westfield online here.

Winter Wardrobe Essential 3 - Military Coat or Beige Trench (or both):

A coat I feel is absolutely essential for a classic winter look. Be it a trendy military coat, or classic beige trench a la Hepburn, you can team it up over everything.

So, you've got those black stockings and summer dresses. Pop over a coat and you've turned your outfit in to the perfect winter get up.

If you're lucky and good at searching, you can pick up a fairly cheap trench from an Op Shop for under $20. See my article on Op Shopping in Perth if you are around that way.

Otherwise Westfield again, has all that you need for this top winter essential. This Sheike Maddison Trench Coat is on sale at Westfield here.

Winter Wardrobe Essential 4 - Boots:

I have got around in boots for as long as I can remember. Never much of a heels girl, if it's a girls night out and I'm wearing a dress, more often than not it's some combat boots on the feet. So imagine my delight when this actually became the 'in' trend. It seems that last ten years I've had it right.

So not only are boots a personal favourite of mine, but I believe an absolute winter necessity.

And you can never have too many. They come in so many different lengths and colours, heights and styles, it's hard to know where to start. So stick with the basics.

I find a cut just under the knee is a perfect flattering fit for most body types. Not only that, you'll stay snuggly and well protected from puddles, or the mini rivers that splatter across the city.

I would say to stick with black. You can pair this colour with anything. Pull them over a pair of your favourite jeans or stockings, or if you're slightly insane, go bare legged with a longer length jacket.

These lace up boots are on sale at Novo through the Westfield website for only $40 here.

Winter Wardrobe Essential 5 - Accessories:

Lastly, you want all the little winter goodies that will keep all the other little bits and pieces warm and snug. Accessories can really brighten and liven up any plain outfit, and during winter I cannot get enough of them.

- Scarves - Wooly ones, long ones wrapped around twice, fringed scarves and head scarves. Whatever your preference, make sure you have as many as possible, in different colours. You can really mix up the look of your jeans or plain black work dress when you add a scarf. And if you're wandering through the city to get to work, every little bit of you will be that little bit more cosy.

Check out a selection of scarves and wraps on the Westfield website here.

- Beanies - Sometimes when I wear a beanie, I get called names. Usually something along the lines of tea cosy. But that's usually by boys. And boy's don't know fashion. So go for it. Grab as many different colours as you can. They keep you so toasty, look sweet, and hide away those occasional bad hair days.

- Gloves and Mittens - Just a few weeks ago, I was walking from the train station to my work at 8am, as I do each weekday. And I thought for a moment there that I had no fingers. Luckily, I realised I have many pairs of gloves and mittens tucked away from last winter that I can actually now use for the reasons they should be used for, not just because they look cute. If you're happy to splurge, a nice pair of black leather gloves will keep you warm the instant you pop them on. And if you aren't, you can pick up a pair of wool gloves or mittens from pretty much anywhere these days. KMart and Big W always
have a good selection, for a little less.

So there you have it. The five winter essentials that can be mixed and matched and teamed up with the simple things you already own. So not only will you look great, you'll be warm and toasty during winter.

Thanks for explaining the denier thing Becky - I used to find that really confusing until recently. It helps to know the difference!
Now on where to find the best winter fashion, my recommendation is Ebay. As USA and Europe has their warm weather while we're freezing our fingers off, and vice versa, I find you can get some great out-of-season deals online. Many retailers now have at least one store on ebay, which is where I now do most of my season shopping :)
