Goodness gracious me, I had goose bumps on my goose bumps recently as I sat and listened to Jack Sim talk about infamous crimes and local historical ghost stories. In the company of my beautiful wife and about 30 other enthralled listeners, Jack recounted the 1964 murder of Captain William John Sturmey - viciously beaten in Hawthorn Park on the southside of Brisbane. Captain Sturmey was an octogenarian retired sea captain who spent his days roaming the pubs around east Brisbane in search of rum. And, it turns out, the murder has never been solved so the murderer is still out there – albeit he would be a fair age by now.

But this wasn't all we got! When he finished with the story of Captain Sturmey, Jack went on to describe how his grandfather used to sit on his back stairs and have a smoke with the ghost of a long dead railway worker – all I can say is, 'Spooky!'

Jack Sim is the force behind, Boggo Road Gaol Pty Ltd's , 'Brisbane Ghost Tours' and a stack of the most interesting real-crime books ever written.

Jack has published true tales about our own Queensland crime scenes, ghost stories and prison history of Boggo Road Gaol and once you've heard Jack's tales or joined a tour you are going to want to keep the details to the fore and you can do that through any of his the many publications.

These include Innocence Lost by Jacqueline Craigie, Death Before Dishonour by Alicia Bennett, Who Killed Betty Shanks? by Ken Blanch, Bloody Brisbane Vol 1 by Jack Sim and Stephen Haynes, More Bloody Brisbane Vol 2 edited by Jack Sim, Horse Tracks and Stirrup Irons by Caroline Stevenson, Slim Halliday - The Taxi Driver Killer by Ken Blanch, The Rampage of Killer Kast by Ken Blanch, Ghosts of Toowong Cemetery by Jack Sim, Haunted Ipswich by Jack Sim, The Ghosts of Boggo Road Gaol by Jack Sim and Boggo Road Gaol - Escapes by Jack Sim and Caroline Stevenson.

All these books can be purchased online for $22 - $25. Or, if you like your thrills in large numbers obtain a compendium of three books for $49.99. You will also be able to purchase books at the Boggo Road Jail Shop or at any of Jack's local guest speaking events.

My opportunity came to enter Jack's macabre world with an invitation to the talk on Captain Sturmey at the Bulimba Library. If you think you and your friends would also like that opportunity then contact your local library and ask them to organise a similar free talk. You might be lucky and have had a gruesome murder in your area for Jack to bring to your attention. See what events are coming up in your area on the Jack Sim Presents Facebook Page.

On the 29 and 30 July, Jack, and several local authors, will be giving talks during the 25th anniversary of the closure of Boggo Road Gaol . Come along for a fascinating family friendly history tour, join in with the activities and purchase a book.

If you are interested in a ghost tour you can take your pick of Jack's various Brisbane Ghost Tours and get the thrill of actually being there and feeling the chill winds blowing all the way from the spirit world. Even non-believers will be enthralled with the fascinating and eerie recounts of our local history.
