If you love the sea and the craftsmanship of traditional wooden boats or anything nautical, then you won't want to miss the Classic and Wooden Boat Festival held at the Australian National Maritime Museum. This special event is usually held only every two years, (alternating with Hobart's Boat Festival). It was due to be held in 2014 then due to construction, delayed until this year.
During the past four years, there has been an increase of even more activities to add to this fabulous day out. A full program will set sail over three days commencing on Friday 15, Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 April.
Families will enjoy a full day of stimulating visual and fun nautical activities. There will be over 100 Ships, Boats, Yachts and Skiffs on view. The stars of the show include the stunning 1924 luxury ketch Hurrica V featured in Baz Luhrmann's film The Great Gatsby, the famous Edwardian Steam Yacht Ena, Gretel 11, Caprice of Huon and Fidelis.
Feast your eyes of the a diverse range of international boats and Halvorsens, Yachts, Skiffs, Classic Speedboats, Steam Launches, Tugboats, Whalers and Navy Workboats from all around Australia. Boat enthusiasts can also hear free lectures and panel discussions at the Symposium.
Your children will love the Kids Boatshed located on the grassed area outside Wharf 7. They can learn to craft a model sailing vessel and then race it with their new friends. Crafty kids can decorate a sailor hat or do some print designs for their own calico bag. Nautical inspiration galore with aqua play and dress up fun.
Shoppers can browse and buy something boaty from an array of private vendors. There will be a treasure chest of Maritime Antiques, Collectables, Ephemera, Books and Maritime related items. If you prefer to take to the water and see the full harbour, then you can book a cruise board Sydney Heritage Fleet's famous Steam Launch Lady Hopetoun. Tickets can be purchased at the museum foyer, but it's a good idea to book online prior as tickets are limited.
To add to this spectacular Boating event there will be special Celebrity Guests and Roving and Musical Entertainment throughout the three day Festival and plenty of delicious food available for purchase.
