The CLASS Study is a sleep research study at Monash University currently recruiting Year 8 students from Melbourne who have access to a smartphone.

With hundreds of teens already participating, the CLASS Study is the largest study looking into the relationship between teenagers' sleep, body clocks, light exposure, mood, and academic performance, and how these change over time.

About The CLASS Study

Adolescence is a crucial time for brain and social development, yet is also a time when a teen's body clock naturally becomes later, causing their sleep patterns to change substantially.

Sleeping later, having less sleep and irregular sleep-wake patterns are thought to contribute to increased sleepiness, inability to concentrate, negative mood and poor mental health. Researchers aim to investigate the relationships between the circadian clock, sleep and light interactions in adolescent cognitive function and how they change over time.

What will participants need to do?

CLASS follows teenagers over 5 years, starting in Year 8 and ending in Year 12. Participants will complete a range of tasks over the 5 years and will be reimbursed up to $487. Participants will also receive a movie voucher on their birthday for each year they are in the study, as well as a brief personalised report about their own sleep.
