A Late Night Affair with Clairy Browne and The Bangin' Rackettes

Late some nights, Brisbane Powerhouse Turbine Platform converts into an intimate venue for live music gigs. "Standing room only", the tickets said, and they were right.
The doors open promptly at 10pm and two orderly lines rush in as local hip-hop soul band
Bankrupt Billionaires start warming up the crowd. In gold lamé and black, the two front women, Kel on Earth and Hannah Macklin soulfully worked their way through a number of original tunes. The remainder of the band, four gents on drums, keys and sampling sounds from laptops, brought music to complement these strong voices. There's a feminine strength to the lyrics here, something which can be lacking in the hip-hop genre. Closing their set with their current single "Shotgun Man", this act is definitely one to look out for.

Candy B provided half-time entertainment. She's about to launch her show called "Australian Booty". She lays down an alphabetised rap, keeping the crowd buzzing; eagerly awaiting the main act. Candy brought some fun with a piece called "Your Mumma's So Fat". You can catch Candy B in "Australian Booty" at the Powerhouse from 30 May to 9 June. Further information and tickets -

About 11pm, five nerdy-looking guys hit the stage. Keys, baritone sax, electric guitar, bass guitar, and drums start the music before Clairy joined the stage. This woman has stage presence, and with the Rackettes, they balance out the image on stage with their sexy, sultry look. They got the crowd moving and shaking to nine or ten songs, all well-known by front-row fans. At one stage Clairy reached out to shake the hand of a fan, and almost ended up in the crowd. After asking the crowd to help out on a song with some melodic humming, the set was closed out with their current single "Love Letter" and although the set-list seemed to indicate an encore, the house lights went up and that was the end of the show.
