In Newtown, you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to picking a cafe. Each little nook and corner is a surprise waiting behind a very unassuming entrance. While walking through Newtown on a Sunday afternoon, I walked into Claire's Crepes. A quaint little cafe with a handful of tables and a little surprise.
The first thing that struck me about the cafe is the wall on one side which was designed with a number of doors. Yes doors. Hats off to the thought of buying broken and old doors and putting them to such a good use. Every inch of the wall was covered with doors, big and small, broken and shaken, old and new and also some which had 'Gentlemen' & 'Ladies' written on them. Wonder where they came from?
As I settled onto a table facing the 'Wall' I noticed the lights in the cafe. It was made of the large Nutella jars that had been drilled with holes and lights fit into it. Surely the light provided by the holed Nutella jars was not sufficient and they were supported by other lighting in the cafe.
The cafe has a very decent spread of sweet and savoury crepes with options to suit every palette. They are quite filling for a breakfast or a mid-day snack. With every savoury crepe is served the most amazing side, a pesto made of roasted capsicum, eggplant, garlic and feta cheese. Something that left me licking the spoon at the end. They cater for customers with special dietary needs and serve all crepe varieties in gluten free options using tapioca flour. I settled for a savoury one however the sweet ones also had quite a selection.
