I am an academic and writer living in Melbourne. I love to travel and I also love writing about all the things Melbourne, regional Victoria and other parts of Australia have to offer.

Ready, Set and GO

"A really good experience" says Lulu, 10 and the sentiment is echoed by her older sister, Charli who is 14. The adults enjoyed it too and there were only a few small arguments along the way about directions or clues. I am sure your family is different (or perhaps not). Anyway, it was all a great experience.

Even on a cold and wet day exploring Melbourne's lane ways with City Quest can be fun

City Quest Australia is a wonderful idea, for locals and visitors alike. It is a self-guided walk based on an interest or just exploring another part of Melbourne. Our quest was the Legendary Laneways where we walked around the famous and some not so famous laneways, looked for clues and learnt about and saw things we had not seen before. Even on a cold and at times, wet Saturday afternoon, it was a very cool thing to do as a family. The girls looked for answers, we all looked into shops and shop windows, we looked up at buildings we had not noticed before and at the end, we reached our very welcome mystery destination for refreshments and had a chat about what we had seen.

And the keen participants are off

This is the way the Quests work (at the moment there are 2 others besides the Legendary Laneways) and it is very simple.

1. Buy the quest ($19.95 per group or $44.80 for all 3 quests)
2. Download the directions, riddles and clues
3. Pick a time to meet if you are doing this as a group
4. Start discovering and having fun
5. Enjoy refreshments at your mystery end destination - at your own cost but with 10-20% discount.
and 6. Share your experience on @cityquestaustralia to be tagged on their Instagram page if you want.

The best thing is that it all self-directed and self-paced, no tour guide (unless there is a self-appointed one from your group), no other people to wait for, no questions being asked; this is your time to discover, explore, bond and have fun. The quests are between 2-4 km walking distance but you can always stop somewhere for a break. The Quests are perfect for children from about 7-8 years onwards. You can also take smaller children in prams. To find out all the details please check here

Unexplored lane ways call for photo-taking

Besides the 3 quests that are offered, you can also customise your quest for $39.95. This customised option is a great idea for small groups and /or special occasions where you get to choose the mystery venue. You can also purchase all 3 quests for a special price of $44.80.

With school holidays coming up this is the perfect opportunity to try out a quest and take some of the pressure off thinking up ideas and activities of what to do.
