Celebrating summer in the west with the West Torrens Summer Festival.

The lazy days of summer lend themselves to entertaining and entertainment: picnics and feasts, displays, exhibitions and concerts, outdoor cinema and fun events for everyone.

The City of West Torrens has been providing free summer community events since 2008, when it conducted Music in the Park. Now, for the summer of 2016, the Council has expanded its program to include all of these activities and more. Events start in early January and stretch right through into February, so there's plenty of opportunity to experience the wide range of events.

The comprehensive program is family oriented, even including the West Torrens Little Days Out, suitable for those from 0 – 17 years. All events start at 10am and finish at 1pm, are free and require no bookings. Just turn up and join in the fun!

First off, Explore (Wednesday 6 January) has the kids adventuring, scavenger hunting and exploring nature at the Mile End Common.

For Splash (Tuesday 12 January) at Mellor Park, you'll need to bring a change of clothes, your bathers and prepare to get muddy and wet. What bliss! BYO towel and water pistol.

Beach (Monday 18 January) is the final event in the series and celebrates summer on the beach with sandcastles, beach cricket, wave riding and beach safety. BYO towel and bathers to West Beach Surf Life Saving Club.

If you're looking for some evening entertainment, look no further than the tried-and-true West Torrens Memorial Gardens, site of previous Music in the Park.

From 6pm – 10pm, the gardens will come alive with sausage sizzles, children's activities (including free face painters) and music. BYO chairs and blankets and BYO alcohol is permitted.

Ready to fly (Saturday 9 January) kicks off the season with an outdoor movie, Paper Planes (G). The movie starts at sunset and runs for 96 minutes. There's even free popcorn to add to the movie atmosphere.

Top of the Popsicle (Saturday 16 January) features music by Bearded Gypsy, Mr Goodnight and Atlantic Street Band.

Big Backyard (Saturday 23 January) has another movie, Inside Out (PG), again starting at sunset and running for 102 minutes.

Fast and Low (Saturday 30 January) is a hot rod and Monaro display, this time offering a gourmet BBQ.

In February, there's a change of venue for the final two events.

Fork on the Road (Saturday 6 February, 5 – 10pm) at Kings Reserve and Thebarton Community Centre, will feature over thirty food trucks, the Wanderers Rock 'n' Roll Car Club (with over fifty cars on display), kids' activities (including free face painting), music and a licensed area. An outdoor stage will feature a fabulous range of music acts, while indoors, get into the swing of things with Rock 'n' Roll demonstrations and heaps of music.

Last event of the program features Mike Steward Big Band, with Luke Thompson at the Thebarton Community Centre (Saturday 13 February 7pm – 10pm). Be entertained by the seventeen piece jazz ensemble, with all proceeds from the $10 entry going to the Australian Refugee Association. This is a licensed event. Tickets are available from www.westtorrens.sa.gov.au .

The West Torrens Summer Festival has been expanded to embrace other events within the area, including live music and exhibitions.

For live music fans, The Wheatsheaf Hotel is always a favourite. From cult accordion ensembles, string quartets and jazz ska, to alt-coutnry, nu-folk and rockabilly, The Wheaty is dedicated to supporting independent original live music. It offers live music every Friday and Saturday night (9:30 – 11:30pm), Sunday afternoon (4:30 – 7pm), sometimes on a Thursday and once a month on a Monday. Entry varies between free and $20. Check The Wheaty's website for details.

The Mile End features live music on Friday nights (7pm) and Sundays (3pm) – with free entry.

And the new Brickworks Marketplace features local musicians performing in the alfresco dining space of Brick Lane, every Saturday at noon, from 9 January – 13 February. Entry is free.

For those inclined towards the visual arts, there are free exhibitions in the area, extending right through to the Fringe. Check the council's website for other listings and more details.

Opening 5 January and continuing throughout the month, the West Torrens Auditorium Gallery features paintings and limited edition prints by fabulous local artist Eliza Piro.

Re-opening 3 January after its end-of-year break, the Centre for Creative Photography is showing Ghoti XIX, showcasing students' work from the previous year.
