I love the things we have here in South Australia – the fabulous food, wine, people and places – beauty everywhere. And, for more beauty in my life, I own and operate a gorgeous little gallery called Mrs Harris’ Shop: www.mrsharrisshop.com.au

Summer fun for everyone - even adults
Do you have mixed feelings when it comes to the long summer school holidays?

It's so good to have the kids around without the pressures of school and sport, and in your mind, do you think of all the great things you might do together? But when it comes to the crunch, have those terrific ideas disappeared in a puff of smoke?

For ten years now, West Torrens Council has been saving the day(s) for hundreds of families with its fabulous Summer Festival.

As an aside, the Council was a category winner at the 2017 National Awards for local government: it won the 'Multicultural Australia – Strength in Diversity Award'. It's just a little reminder of the quality that's on offer with this festival – it's up there with the rest of the nation!

And, it's not going to let you down this year. The Summer Festival is bigger and better than ever, with free fun for local residents and visitors. How good is that?

It's BYO everything for many of the events: food, drinks, chairs, blankets – whatever you need. You can be budget conscious, or not and as organised, or not, as you like! Check the program though, because a couple of the events are licensed, and that means no BYO alcohol.

In general, no bookings are required. Again, check the program, because transport is available for some of the children's events, and must be booked if needed. Call 8416 6228 or email impact@wtcc.sa.gov.au to book.

Summer Festival kicks off on Saturday 6 January with one of two Outdoor Cinema events at the Memorial Gardens in Brooker Terrace, Hilton, where the festival first started ten years ago.

Moana screens from sunset, but in the meantime, there's food (drinks and icecream too), children's entertainment, face painting and music to keep everyone occupied. BYO chairs and blankets, and BYO food and alcohol is OK too!

Second of the Outdoor Cinema offerings is Girl Asleep, again making a fun-filled evening for the whole family with the accompanying entertainment until sunset when the movie starts.

The Summer Festival began in 2008 with an event called Music in the Park. It's quite fitting then, that such success should be repeated. Although the name has changed, there's music aplenty and fun for kids and families in the Gardens this year.

There won't be a 'down' moment with a great list of musicians on show, loads of kids' entertainment and face painting, and of course great food, icecreams and coffee.

BYO chairs and blankets, and BYO food and alcohol is OK too!

Also with a family focus and in the Gardens, is a lively event that's a fabulous fusion of cultures.

All Together Now

With two stages for entertainment and so much happening, you might not know where to start! Along with dance, music and kids' entertainment, there'll be fabulous food, icecream and coffee. BYO chairs and blankets, and BYO food and alcohol is OK too!

As always, there are some great events just for kids. The Little Day Out program feature three events specifically for kids 0 – 17 years.

STEAM

That's Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths – and ART! But don't let those schoolie sounding words turn you off – this program is full of fun! Explore your inner creative through a whole range of activiites – Council provides the LEGOฎ, crafts and games and you supply the brains!

Don't forget to book transport if required. (see above)

Thebarton Community Centre (corner South Road and Ashwin Parade, Torrensville) Tuesday 9 January 1 – 3pm

If you're feeling a bit left out because you're not a kid or a family, don't worry. You don't have to be a kid to enjoy the Summer Festival.

Try Thebartonia in the vicinity of the famous Wheaty, for some adult fun. It's a street party set on two stages, with music, roving performers, food trucks and a whole lot of fun. This one is a licensed event, so no BYO!

Culmination of the Summer Festival is the super-popular Fork on the Road event – West Side Fork, returning to Kings Reserve for feasting and fun. There'll be more than thirty food trucks (no rumbling tummies here!), free face painting and kids' entertainment, the Wanderers Rock'n'Roll Car Club display and an outdoor stage with a huge line-up of great performers.
