The creatively themed City Extra is a cheap and cheerful venue for any kind of food at any time of day, at an amazing location in Circular Quay.

I went for a late breakfast, truthfully this took place well into the afternoon. At City Extra, you could have breakfast as late as you want- they are open 24 hours, and thankfully serve breakfast during every one of those hours.

With a menu designed to look like an old-timey newspaper, endless food choices were squeezed into columns reminiscent of classified ads. The menu was visually complicated; if you do not have the patience for this, I would recommend looking at the text version of the menu on their website.

The freshly squeezed orange juice was touted as a must-try on the menu, and it did not disappoint. While the colour was not as robust as orange juice normally is, the flavour certainly packed a punch.

I ordered the Big Breakfast, a jumbo-sized dish with a little bit of everything. This consisted of everything you would expect from a big breakfast: eggs with grilled tomato, bacon, a sausage, a hash browns and a bread roll.

The highlights of the breakfast were the hash brown and, surprisingly, the grilled tomato. I usually despise grilled tomatoes in breakfast dishes, finding them watery and flavourless. This grilled tomato was cooked to perfection, flavoursome and juicy without being dilute. The hash brown was quite different from regular café hash browns, being much larger and dark on the outside rather than the usual golden hue. Hash browns are always a must for any indulgent café breakfast, and even more so at City Extra.

The rest of the breakfast was nothing to write home about. The poached eggs were overly runny, as were the scrambled eggs ordered by my dining partner. Being such an ample sized meal, not eating the less palatable parts of the breakfast did not mean going hungry.

The high point of City Extra is its location. Facing the wharves, the top level of City Extra offers scenic water views.

I found that City Extra did not quite match up to its location on Google Maps. It was located closest to Wharf Four, rather than at Wharf Five as the map would have you believe. Despite this, it was not difficult to find.
