Sun 11 Nov 2012

Due to the success of The Sunday Age City2Sea in 2011, this event is on again on Remembrance Day this year, Sunday the 11th of November 2012.

The event attracted 13,500 participants for the first ever City2Sea last year. The event started at the arts precinct on St Kilda Road, right near the NGV International. This 14km course is quite flat. Unlike the Sydney sister event that has been around since 1971, and the new Brisbane sister event that will commence next year, 'heartbreak hill' does not have a place in Melbourne.

The entire course was quite flat. Most of the course went along St Kilda Road until it turned into the Grand Prix track at Albert Park. Most of the course was at Albert Park along the golf course, Albert Park Lake and the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre to end at St Kilda Beach. Despite having no heartbreak hill in the Melbourne version, the flat course was still quite challenging. This could have been the case having only done it once, yet many people will find the course easier this year should they choose to re-enter despite its twists and turns. It felt a little weird running the course on the 14th of November last year with City2Surf signage that tells you how many kilometres you have run thus far.

Adequate refreshments are provided along the way, as well as a finisher's medal. The entry fee also includes free public transport to and from the event upon presentation of your bib.

Early bird registrations are being extended until the 5th of October 2012, as at the time of writing this. Anyone who has not registered yet for this event, and wishes to register will need to pick up their race bib from the City2Sea expo. Early bird entry costs: under 5's - $10. Kids - $40. Adults - $60. From the 5th of October until race capacity, the entry fees will be as follows: under 5's - $10. Kids - $55. Adults - $75. The City2Sea expo (where participants who enter after the 21st of September will need to collect their race packs) is at Media House, 655 Collins Street, Docklands. The expo will be open from 8am to 6pm on Friday the 9th of November, and from 9am to 4pm on Saturday the 10th of November.

In terms of charity support, this year's City2Sea will be extra special as the race will be held on Remembrance Day and, interestingly enough, participants will run past the Shrine of Remembrance. As a result, if you're planning on going to the Shrine of Remembrance to pay your respects, plan your travel arrangements in advance. In recognition of this event for 2012 taking place on Remembrance Day, the organisers will donate a portion of the participants' entry fees to the Poppy Appeal. Because the City2Sea takes place in November, the organisers are also working with Movember. Keeping fit is proving to be a great way for people to pay their respects in Melbourne on Remembrance Day in 2012. Remember to train adequately prior to the 11th of November. There is still ample time to do so.
