The Slow Movement is a philosophy or mindset shared globally by those who value quality of life. It's not about doing everything at a snail's pace but doing things at the right pace. A Cittaslow (Slow Town) is a place whose inhabitants embrace this philosophy. It involves celebrating the identity, environment and heritage of the town while protecting community wellbeing. The small river port town of Goolwa became Australia's first Cittaslow in 2007.

On the last Friday of each month during summer the Goolwa community comes together for a celebration called 'At The Wharf'. Locals and visitors gather on the lawns near the wharf to enjoy local food, local wine, local beer and local music. It's a free event and everyone's welcome. It's a chance to slow down and celebrate all the good things the Fleurieu Peninsula has to offer.

An extra 'At The Wharf' event will take place on Sunday March 8 to coincide with Fringe Sunday in Goolwa and to raise funds to help Kangaroo Island communities affected by the recent bushfires.

Local Goolwa businesses and community organisations have donated a treasure trove of prizes including vouchers for accommodation, restaurant meals, river cruises and spa treatments. These items will be included in a giant raffle while priceless art, donated by talented local artists, will be offered at a silent auction. Funds raised previously have been previously donated to the KI Mayoral Fund. This time Cittaslow Goolwa will direct all proceeds from the raffle and silent auction to KI Wildlife Rescue and also to Goolwa CFS whose members were actively involved in fighting the fires on Kangaroo Island.

There'll be the usual delicious food, including Cittaslow's famous Paella with Goolwa Pipis, as well as wine from Currency Creek and Langhorne Creek and everyone's favourite Meechi Beer.

Food and drink stalls will be set up on the lawns in front of Signal Point Gallery from lunchtime onwards. Popular band Gumbo YaYa will play on the deck from 1.30 until 5pm and a dancing opportunity is guaranteed.

Everyone is welcome to bring along chairs and a table, or perhaps a picnic rug, and set up on the lawns. The whole family is welcome, in fact, dogs and other pets make frequent appearances at Cittaslow events.

Chances are the Oscar W paddle steamer will chug past and the Cockle Train will also make an appearance.
