Bugging Out Under the Big Top: Cirque Du Soliel – OVO
Bugging Out Under the Big Top: Cirque Du Soliel – OVO

Ovo' - the new insect-themed traveling show from Cirque du Soleil, has set up shop at Sydney's Fox Studios, at the Grand Chapiteau big top from now until 25 November 2012. If there is one show you must see this year, put this one at the top of your list.

The production takes you through a day in the life of insects, taking the audience on a journey through a diverse ecosystem filled with life, where insects work, eat, crawl, flutter, play, fight and look for love in a non-stop riot of energy and movement.

When a mysterious egg appears in their midst, the insects are awestruck and intensely curious about this iconic object that represents the enigma and cycles of their lives – and that is the essence of Ovo – which means 'egg' in Portuguese.

Ovo then plunges the audience in a series of indescribable gravity-defying stunts, which will send jaws dropping and send brains into a scramble on how the performers have made possible the impossible.

With non-stop energy from beginning to end, Ovo begins with the first acrobat – a dragonfly, who twists and spirals over an apparatus symbolizing a vine and leaving the audience amazed.

This scene is followed by a group of Chinese acrobats - the 'Antys Ants' - who are one of the highlights of the show for me. They spin, catapult and juggle oversized corn cobs and kiwi fruit through the air, in addition to catapulting each other in perfect synchronization, leaving me totally engrossed and lost for words.

There are far too many amazing acts to describe, such as the bright coloured caterpillar who reminisces a slinky toy and performs an interesting and inexplicable dance, or the balancing acts of aerial acrobatics and trapeze which sends your mind into a spin.

Most impressive and difficult to comprehend is the performer who executes a number of high wire stunts on a loose tightrope. Words cannot explain this act but you have to see it to believe it. It is otherworldly.

Whether young or old, viewers of Ovo will emerge from the Grand Chapiteau in awe of such am amazing group of artists who travel the world, bringing amazing talent.

Despite the fact I have seen a handful of Cirque du Soleil Circuses, Ovo has somehow managed to raise the bar yet again. It is quite simply, mind-blowing.

Words which spell the same forwards and backwards are called Palindromes like Ovo, and to use a palindrome to describe the circus, I would say 'wow'.

OVO is a two hour and a half performance, including a 30 minute intermission, and you definitely won't go home disappointed. Tickets start from $94 and go up to $275 for premium seats, and can be purchased from Ticketek.

Rating: 4/5.
