Alice is a jaw-dropping spectacle from Tim Lawson and Simon Painter, the creators of the hits
The Illusionists and
Circus 1903. They aim "to transport audiences to a world of imagination and spectacle," with Lewis Carroll's
Alice in Wonderland fantastical theme.

It's a multi-national spectacle, with performers from Russia to Australia reimagining the crazy characters from
Alice in Wonderland. The sparkly-adorned elastic ladies of Mongolia worm and contort into the caterpillar, whilst the Ethiopian
TT Boys of
Cirque de Soleil, Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum flip and fly in their acrobatic antics.

The Mad Hatter, legendary magician Jeff Hobson from the United States, acts as the rye Ringmaster with a pocketful of tricks and the energy and wit of Robin Williams. His audience volunteers help with card and mind tricks and even the odd balloon animal. The Hatter describes himself as the reason magicians use the word poof, as his sarcastic wit and flamboyant outfit delight all.

Darius Thompson provides classically themed live music, such as the fiddle-playing White Rabbit racing between scenes before he is late for a very important date. Meanwhile, the March Hare, Alexandre Lane from Canada, repeatedly twists and turns in his spinning steel ring. The Dormouse teeters on a tower of teacups instead of sleeping, and the Dragonflies whirl and flutter high in the air with teeth of steel.

The Tanzanian Red and White Knights,
Australia’s Got Talent finalists
Ramadhani Brothers, are incredible hand-to-hand and head-to-head balance acrobats with formidable strength and balance.

Maria Sarach (
Cirque de Soleil) is a Russian Queen of Hearts with immense strength. She contorts her body like a snake poised to strike.

Angela Aaron’s costumes are clever and creative, embracing the craziness of the
Alice in Wonderland theme while allowing the performers flexibility of movement. The soundtrack is equally innovative, with Martin Raabe-Olsen and Marius Christiansen creating contemporary versions of the world’s most famous classics. The concert hall’s magnificent organ even booms out Bach’s
Fugue as the hall turns red and the performers parade majestically.

Layla Schillert (
Australian Idol) is the operatic soprano, Alice performing between scenes
with her piercing voice and a tender
Ave Maria.
The lighting recreates the shape of the Big Top and pulses dramatically with the high-octane performances. The Creative Directors, Brisbanite Ash Jacks McCready and Kirsty Painter, have blurred the boundaries between performance art and the thrill of the circus in an innovative and exciting show that will have you on the edge of your seat and gasping in awe.
