Circus Rio has been doing the rounds in our beautiful festival state for the last month or so and the fun only seems to continue, with them setting up tent in Port Noarlunga.
Being a unique style of circus that is animal-free and presents its audience with a jam-packed carnival experience involving semi-dangerous yet gravity-defying stunts and acts through aerials on silk, FMX bikes, acrobats, and a magical twist with Samba dancers, there's a bit of something for everyone to enjoy!
With their final leg in the tour across South Australia, I was fortunate to score an interview with the team behind Circus Rio - have a read of our exchange below:
Tema: Who are the faces behind Circus Rio/Who are the key people involved? Circus Rio is an all-encompassing team of cast and crew, led by Yuriy Abrosimov. Yuriy is a world-famous, Russian rolla bolla artist who has been known to direct shows such as Shangrila and The Great Euro Circus. With professional training at the Moscow Circus College and Moscow University of Culture, Yuriy has had the Circus running through his veins from an early age.
How did the concept of Circus Rio become a reality? Our dedicated producer, Yuriy, believes in the circus as an art form, and with his passion for world heritage, he brought together some of the world's most talented performers to create Circus Rio in Australia.
What do you think helps the acts of Circus Rio stand out from the rest of the circus shows? We have famous acts from all across the globe within the one, 2 hour show! Our performers hail from Brazil, Russia, France, Cuba, Spain, Ukraine, Great Britian, Belorussia, Colombia, Chile (to name a few) and of course, here in Australia too!
What is your most well-loved performance of the show? It's hard to pick a crowd favourite, as everyone and every city is different! The younger kids tend to think our clown, Will, is hilarious! We have Poppy and Zion, our incredible acrobatics team… Not to mention one our FMX stunts! Little known fact, the first FMX flip ever to be performed within a Circus tent was here at Circus Rio!
What would you say to someone who hasn't experienced the magic of Circus Rio yet? There is something for everyone here at Circus Rio! From grandparents, to parents, to teens, to bubs, we are a family friendly show aimed for all ages, so definitely don't miss out while it is here in Adelaide!
What should people anticipate from attending a Circus Rio show? You can expect fun, exhilaration, that 'wow' factor and plenty of laughs!
Where else in Australia has Circus Rio set up their tents? Circus Rio has set up its tent in Queensland and New South Wales, South Australia (obviously) and next stops will be Victoria and New South Wales!
Have you performed overseas as well - if so, would you like to talk about that? Circus Rio is a worldwide first in Australia! Our talented acts have performed all across the globe in other troupes, but our next plan is to take Circus Rio around the world after we treat all of Australia!
How have you found your time touring in Adelaide so far? We love it, what a beautiful city – one of the prettiest we have seen so far! The people are so friendly here and we've had so much to do on our days off!
Circus Rio will be performing at Noarlunga Centre till June 16 and in Mount Barker from June 20 - 30. Book your tix here and/or here respectively.
Brilliant interview Tema - we (my 12yo nephew, 17yo son and myself) were lucky enough to experience Circus Rio last Saturday, at Noarlunga Centre and my nephew's still talking about it and telling everyone about it. It's the first circus event any of us had been to in many years and it was great that it was focused on artists and did not include animals. The boys loved the finish with the FMX bikes. We were wondering how they managed to do that and what the room for error was - totally groundbreaking!
