One thing about Nova in Carlton is that certain movies seem to linger. Often when they have finished elsewhere Nova will keep them on for a couple more weeks. As movies have such a short shelf-life this is a great way not to miss out.

Such was the case with Belle which I rocked up to on Monday morning.

I pulled out my student card ready to save a few dollars off the adult price of $19.

The ticket seller said. "You won't need that. All tickets are $7 for sessions before 4pm on Mondays."

Having just achieved free two our parking (try Lygon just a bit further up near the housing commission towers) this made for a really cheap outing. It meant attending a new movie for less than one would pay for a new release video.

Being a Monday I thought there would be plenty of seats so I didn't hurry and ordered a take-away coffee to take in with me.

Nova can be a warren and all the corridors were vacant so when I finally got to the right door I was a couple of minutes late.

It seemed so quiet I said to the usher, " I must be the only one here."
"You're kidding" he said and opened the door on a sea of uplifted faces staring at the screen.

He then closed the door after me leaving me to my own devices. He could have at least found me a seat.

It was pitch dark and I edged my way to the back where I stood like a goof as visibility was limited and there didn't seem to be one single seat available.

Someone finally took pity on me. He got up out of his seat grabbed me by the arm and lead me a spare seat in the back row for which I will be forever grateful.

So obviously the news is out. Nova's discount day is the cheapest in town.

As mentioned tickets are only $7 for sessions before 4pm but they are also only $9 for sessions after 4pm and 3D tickets are $13 all day. Please note these discounts do not apply on public holidays.

(For which cinemas have cheap tickets on other days click here. )

This compares favourably with Waverley Cinema in the suburbs that generally have $8 tickets all the time although they do go as low as $6 as well for some movies. Click here.

You can just rock up, but I would get there a bit earlier than you might normally so although you do have the option to book online through the Cinema Nova website .

I think having to pay $1 extra (per ticket!) to book online seems a bit much when you are saving the cinema money in staff costs at the box office.

Discount Monday online sales are available on the Saturday afternoon prior to that Monday. There is however a $1 booking fee.

Also worth checking out for really cheap movie tickets are Ticketbounty and On the House where you can sometimes even get free tickets although again weigh up the booking fee. A favourite of mine is Showfilms first as once or twice a year they offer free pre-release films and these are top notch. Click here.
