Recently I've discovered the delicious goodness that is a macaron. Don't ask how it took me so long, but since I now know how good they are it's become a mission of mine to find places in the city that make them well. Of course, the perfect macaroon is usually accompanied by a good coffee. At Cimbalino Espresso you will find both.
Located in the top level of the Enex100 building (the food court sandwiched between St George's Terrace and the Hay Street Mall), Cimbalino was bustling with energy when I got there at about 9.30am, before I started work. As well as the CBD, they also have locations in Cottesloe and Dalkeith - they must be well-known, because office workers surrounded the little stall cafe like they were under siege. I was a bit nervous about how long I would have to wait, but decided to risk it and approached the counter. The first thing that caught my attention was, of course, the macarons.
There were at least ten orders for takeaway coffee before mine, and I got it in about eight minutes, so compared to other places in the city that was pretty quick. There was one staff member taking orders and another two making the coffee, and they worked at a fast pace to keep up with demand. Having said that, they were still friendly and composed, and didn't make me feel rushed. The two girls looked like they were having fun while working hard, which is always a nice thing to see.
I hate getting coffee that burns my tongue off, so I was glad to find this one had a good temperature- not very strong but I ordered a mocha so perhaps that's why. The flavour was smooth and easy to drink. For almost five dollars (they only have one size) it isn't cheap, but for Perth prices that's not a huge difference to most cafes for a regular size - and the cups they use are generous.
My macaron (I ordered chocolate and raspberry flavour) was as heavenly as I had hoped, and as a bonus they are all gluten free. Once again they are on the expensive side at $3.50 a pop, but I don't mind paying a bit more for the great taste.
I'd recommend trying Cimbalino out if you like smooth, velvety coffee and macarons, and if your budget isn't an issue. For me, it might not be an everyday visit (I would probably get diabetes) but as a weekly treat I'll stop by again.
