I am a keen traveller. Currently rediscovering my own backyard and the rest of Australia. I enjoy nature, history and the quirkiness of what the world has to offer.

Quality food on a budget
Cilantro Restaurant is at Holmesglen TAFE, Moorabbin, and it is a training college for hospitality students. I have been many times over the years to their high teas, lunches, a la carte dinners as well as their buffet dinners.

Recently I dined at Cilantro with friends on the first night back after lockdown. The food was spot on and the waiters were friendly as they overcame their nervousness of approaching 'real' customers.

All tasty dishes

The restaurant is small and intimate and you can catch glimpses of the students at work in the kitchen. The students were in the kitchen creating mouth-watering dishes and also in front of house and behind the bar mixing up the mocktails and creating cocktails as well as pouring beers. From outside the restaurant, you can also see where the magic happens.

Homemade sourdough bread

Silver service is always a lovely way to dine. Sourdough bread and warm white rolls, that students baked, were placed on our bread plates with expertise. As we were lovers of fresh homemade bread, we had a couple of extras throughout the evening.

I had the pan-fried truffle gnocchi with duck ragout and blackberries for entree. The plate it was served on was warm to keep the dish hot. A nice dish to start the 3-course meal.

My main course was braised smoke beef blade, which melted in my mouth, served on creamy mashed potato.

Very tasty and rich

For dessert, my friend chose the warm chocolate pudding, which they ate quickly. Always a good sign of good food. I selected the vanilla creme brulee, which was tasty and I chose to eat slowly and enjoy the custard.

Decadent deliciousness

The menu had something for everyone. When Cilantro confirms your booking, they ask if there are any dietary requirements. As it is a training restaurant, it is not open year-round. Dates are put on the website each term so you will need to check here each term. The restaurant asks you to arrive between 6 pm and 6:30 pm and closes around 9 pm. The menu can be found on the website as well. At the time of writing, the 3 course a la carte menu was $30 plus drinks. Children are also catered for.

There is a comprehensive drinks list as well as two mocktails and two cocktails on offer which the students explained to us.

Refreshing mocktail
