Tucked away at Penny Place in Adelaide CBD, is a good place to enjoy Korean BBQ. It is very popular so booking ahead is advised to avoid having to wait for a table.
As with most Korean BBQ restaurants, the meats are served to customers raw for cooking on the grill sets at the tables. The slices of pork belly were cut a bit thicker than the norm, giving them a slightly different texture after it had been cooked. We also liked that it was not too fatty and when cooked correctly was not too tough.
Their LA Beef Short Ribs were marinated, which imparted them with a hint of a sweet-savoury flavour. While it was a bit chewy, it was tasty and not too difficult to separate from the bones. Korean chilli paste, onion soy sauce and oil flavoured with salt and pepper were provided as dipping sauces.
The Wombok on their menu actually refers to a variety of herb known as Perilla, rather than the Chinese Cabbage that typically comes to mind when the name is brought up. The perilla leaves were very soft and had a hint of a peppery flavour. They were also quite large, allowing them to be used for wrapping a fair amount of ingredients.
For something more "normal", a Mix Veggie Platter consisting of chilli, onion, garlic, lettuce, mushroom and carrots can be ordered. We cooked the onions, mushrooms and carrots on the grill along with the meats and used the lettuce leaves as a wrapper for the meats and vegetables. The garlic and chilli can be eaten as is but if they desire, diners can grill them prior to consuming them.
The bean sprouts in the Bean Sprout Salad still retained a bit of bite. The dressing imparted them with a hint of sesame flavour. Its relatively plain flavour makes it a good partner for the stronger tasting dishes.
In addition to Korean BBQ, the restaurant also offers a few cooked dishes such as Kimchi Stew with Rice. Set menus intended to be shared with at least two diners are also available to help ease the trouble of picking which dishes to order.
