An annual Chinese tradition, the
Dragon Boat Festival will be held on Sunday 3 June 2018 from 10.30am to 2pm at the Champion Lakes Regatta Centre, Henley Drive, Champion Lakes. Aside from enjoying the races and cheering on the dragon boats, you'll be entertained by a traditional Lion Dance and other cultural dance performances. Special rice dumplings go hand-in-hand with this event and will be available on the day.
The tradition started to honour Qu Yuan, a Chinese patriotic poet and minister who lived during the Warring States period of ancient China. Upon committing suicide by wading into the Miluo River while holding a rock, it is said that villagers carried their dumplings and boats to the midd of the river in a desperate attempt to save him. In order to keep fish and even spirits away from his body, they beat drums and splashed the water with their paddles. Rice was thrown into the water not only as a food offering to his spirit, but to also distract the fish away from his body.
