Recently opened on Melbourne Street in North Adelaide, Chulpan is the only Korean restaurant that we know of in Adelaide that offers the dish known as Dakgalbi. Dakgalbi is a traditional and popular dish consisting of marinated chicken stir-fried with cabbage, sweet potatoes and Korean rice sticks in a spicy sauce.

When ordering Chulpan's Dakgalbi, diners have to order at least two servings. The Dakgalbi was presented already cooked in a pan on top of a portable stove. The chicken was tender and the store's own spicy sauce had a delectable spicy flavour that was not too intense. Cabbage, pumpkin and Korean rice sticks added extra flavour and texture to the dish. For a more filling dish, extra ingredients like udon, ramen and oyster mushrooms can be added for an extra cost.

For the complete experience, diners can order a bowl of fried rice to mix into what remains of their Dakgalbi. As its name implies, the rice is fried slightly to give it a bit of crispiness and a topping of shredded nori provided additional flavour. If they wish, diners can turn on the stove to give their rice a bit of crust.

The other main dish offered at the restaurant is Kalguksu, a soup dish that features handmade noodles in a savoury broth. The handmade noodles in their Chicken Kalguksu had a slightly chewy texture and there was sufficient shredded chicken to make eating the dish a satisfying experience. It had a subtle savoury flavour from the chicken broth and spring onion, carrots and roasted seaweed completed the dish.

The serving size of their Chicken Gang Jung makes it perfect to serve as a side dish. The chicken was juicy with a nice crisp coating. Korean rice sticks provided a contrast of texture and the spiciness of the sweet and spicy sauce is suitable for those not used to spicy foods. A scattering of crushed roasted peanuts added a hint of nutty flavour along with a bit of crunch.

For vegetarians, there is a version of the Gang Jung that substitutes chicken with cubes of fried tofu. The tofu had a softer texture and provided a hint of nutty flavour different from the chicken. We also liked that it was fried sufficiently to give the exterior a nice bit of crispiness.

The décor of the restaurant gave it a relaxed feel. It can get quite busy, so arriving early or booking ahead is advised to avoid having to wait for a table.
