Chubby Buddies Cafe

Chubby Buddies is the sort of place that I love to review because it's not what you expect. I found it with my Mum on one of the stinking hot days we've been having recently, and it wildly exceeded our expectations.
We initially entered both to buy a drink, and to use their bathroom. I'll be honest: the cafe doesn't stand out visually. It has a relatively unattractive orange, yellow and brown colour scheme inside, and it doesn't look any better from outside on Nepean Hwy, though it is conveniently close to the beach.
Having said that, the service was prompt, polite and helpful. More importantly (in my hungry opinion) the food was delicious!
We quickly quenched our thirst with a Tropicana smoothie (they had half a dozen options). We ordered one to share, and the waitress asked us if we'd like it in separate glasses. We said yes, but still weren't expecting two full glasses. A pretty good deal given it was cheaper than a boost smoothie, and we got to sit down!
Once we'd had a chance to cool down we also ordered some food. We chose the vegetarian dumplings, and when we couldn't decide on a second vegetarian dish, the waitress recommended the mushroom rolls.
The vegetarian dumplings came in a set of three, and were served with a soy sauce. They had a thicker outside than I was expecting, more like a thin steamed dough than a rice paper. They had water chestnut inside along with the expected veg. I found that this added a complex texture to complement the taste.
I was 100% happy with the vegetarian dumplings until I tasted the mushroom rolls. There were, unfortunately, only two in a serve, though they were accompanied by a blended chilli sauce. They were amazing. Usually mushroom dumplings or rolls are just mush inside. These had used multiple varieties of mushrooms, including some that are usually dried, resulting in a textured and incredibly tasty snack.
The mushroom rolls would well and truly be enough to guarantee another visit from me, but Chubby buddies also offers an array of teas. One is available for sampling, while pots are $3.50, and $1 for a refill. It was too hot for us to buy some when we were there, but I'll be bringing a novel along on a cool day to try their herbal varieties and their chocolate dumplings. Yum.
