A stroll down the Champs Elysee is fabulous at any time of year, but at Christmas it's transformed into a magical Christmas wonderland with a market installed.



Running from 14th November until the weekend of Epiphany (4th January), the Christmas market adds a definite sense of community, excitement and sparkle to this famous road. Scores of stands line either side of the major carriageway.



There are plentiful sellers of fast food, offering a wide range of fare. If you want to get something for that cultured person who has everything, stalls like the wine gadget one are bound to offer ideas.



In keeping with tradition there are craft stalls, and ones selling gingerbread delights of all kinds.



Christmas baubles abound, in a thoroughly tasteful fashion.



On a cold winter's day, what more could you want than a steaming glass of mulled wine? Various stalls are selling it, at reasonable prices in great robust plastic mugs which themselves act as souvenirs of the event.



Chocolate stalls, hot roasted chestnuts... it's all there, evoking the smells and sights which conjure up the magic of winter and a European Christmas.



Further up the street the major decorations kick in, with beautiful white light displays transforming the street.



The sweeping boulevard is so substantial that there is even room for a small funfair. Bright lights and fun rides litter the street, making sure that visitors of all ages can have a good time.



To get there, head to any point on the Champs Elysee. The market stretches halfway up the road from the Place du Concorde, so is probably best approached from that direction, although it's only a short walk to the Arc de Triomphe. Expect lots of people at peak times, but the pavements are big enough to accommodate everyone. Prices seem to be very reasonable. Even if you don't buy anything, just the experience of being there is glorious!
