Celebrate the magic of the Christmas season
Originating in the German speaking part of Europe during the late Middle Ages, Christmas Markets are colourful street markets which occur during the weeks of Advent, leading up to Christmas. A central attraction of the markets would be a Nativity Scene portraying the advent of Jesus, while surrounding market stalls would sell a variety of traditional treats and wares including handicrafts and Christmas tree decorations. While markets in Vienna and Bautzen date back to the 13th and 14th centuries, over recent years the Christmas Market tradition has spread far abroad, and has been embraced particularly enthusiastically here in Perth.

What the Perth Christmas Markets lack in history and 'olde world' charm, they more than make up in local colour and the talent of the artisans who use the events to showcase their exquisite creations. A visit to these markets will undoubtedly provide you with unique, locally-made gifts which will please even the fussiest friend or family member. At the same time, you'll be offering support to local artists, designers and small business people. The following is a list of some of the best Christmas markets which will be held this year during November and December.

Fremantle Art Centre is always a hub of creative activity and this is never more apparent than during the Bazaar Christmas Market, which is held in its gardens each year in early December. Inspired by the European Christmas market tradition, Bazaar was established in 1985 and is considered by many locals to be the foremost pre-Christmas craft gig in the Perth region. On display and for sale are an exquisite range of locally-made goodies created by Perth's leading artists and designers.
This year's Bazaar kicks off on Friday, 30th November from 5.00pm until 10.00pm, and continues on over the weekend (Saturday, 1st and Sunday, 2nd December), from 9.00am until 5.00pm. Entry is $2.00 for adults and free of charge for children under 12 years old.
Presented by 'Unwrapped', the Perth City Christmas Markets will be held this year on Sunday 9th December and Sunday, 16th December, from 12.00 noon until 5.00pm, at Forrest Place in the heart of Perth City. These two market days will be a showcase for high quality products which have been made and designed in Australia: art, photography, designer wares, fashion, gourmet food and much more. Entry to these markets is free.

Illumnites @ Perth Cultural Centre Close by in the Perth Cultural Precinct, the 'On William Collective' will be holding their Illuminites Christmas Gift Markets on December 14, from 5pm until 10pm. This market features local arts, crafts, fashion and designer wares, plus live entertainment including Christmas carols. For more information, check out the Perth Cultural Centre website.
Market Girl On its website, Market Girl promotes itself as being 'the place where all things handmade, boutique and unique come together for your shopping pleasure in a boutique market atmosphere. Market Girl has something for everyone!' With a promise like that, Market Girl could be a good shopping destination to head to, as Christmas is approaching so rapidly.
Market Girl holds its markets at various places around Perth throughout the year, in this way ensuring that its wares are seen by a greater range of potential buyers. This year, its Christmas market will be held at Prendiville Catholic College on Constellation Drive, Ocean Reef, on Sunday, December 2nd from 10.00am until 3.00pm.
Ellenbrook Christmas Market
Ellenbrook Christmas Markets are part of the annual Ellenbrook Christmas Festival and promise to be an exciting day full of wonderful shopping opportunities, free entertainment and family fun. Father Christmas himself is even rumoured to be making an appearance. This year Ellenbrook's Christmas markets will be held on Sunday, 9th December from 11.00am until 5.00pm at the Ellenbrook Town Centre Park on Main Street. For a fun family day, this is an event which will be hard to beat.
Quairading Christmas Fair Less than two hours away from Perth, Quairading is a small wheat-belt that which hosts a wonderful Christmas craft fair every December. If you love handcrafts but find the crowds and trendiness of the Perth markets a bit off-putting, you may find it worthwhile to drive out here, enjoy the country hospitality and pick up some unique locally-made gifts for your friends and family. For more information, including dates and times, phone the Shire of Quairading on 08 9645 1001 or send an email to email@example.com.
