Many of us enjoy markets at any time of the year, but in December they offer a great opportunity for us to get our Christmas shopping done and purchase family and friends gifts that are perhaps more unique than what can be found in our local shopping centres. The following list contains four Christmas markets in Canberra where you may find just what your looking for this festive season.

Eco-Elves Night Market
This eco-market is held just for Christmas and will take place on Friday December 7, from 5.00pm to 9.30pm. It can be found at the Canberra Environment Centre, on the corner of Lawson Crescent and Lennox Crossing in Acton (right by the National Museum).

On sale will be food (including organic, free range, Fair Trade and local produce), as well as local, upcycled, Fair Trade and eco-friendly gifts. These include upcycled wall-hangings, clothes, homewares and decorations (if you're wondering what upcycled means, as I did, it refers to goods that have been produced from unwanted, waste materials).

You will also find solar panels, rainwater tanks, compost bins/worm farms, seedlings, natural and chemical free cleaning products. In addition to all these, there will be pre-loved clothing and accessories, as well as Fair Trade handicrafts and homewares.

As you can see, this market offers a chance to get yourself some sustainable gifts and counter the wastefulness that is often attached to Christmas.

Handmade Christmas Market
For a handmade gift, look to this Christmas market from Handmade Canberra . It will take place on Saturday December 8 and Sunday December 9, from 10.00am to 4.00pm, at the National Convention Centre , which is located at 31 Constitution Avenue. There will be over 170 stalls, located in three different areas for you to explore - the foyer, the hall and upstairs. A full list of the designers who will be at the market can be found here .

Canberra Christmas Market
A bit closer to Christmas (but not so close you're stressed about shopping, I hope) is the Canberra Christmas Market . It will be held on Saturday December 15, from 11.00am to 5.00pm, and Sunday December 16, from 9.00am to 5.00pm. You will find the market in the Fitzroy Building at Exhibition Park In Canberra (EPIC) , which is located on the corner of Northborne Avenue and Flemington Road in Canberra's CBD. Parking is free, but entry to the market itself costs $3.

The Old Bus Depot Markets
These markets are usually held every Sunday throughout the year, but in December, they will be open on Sunday too (until Christmas). They run from 10.00am to 4.00pm, at the Kingston Foreshore Redevelopment area, 21 Wentworth Avenue in Kingston. The first weekend will also feature a Christmas Stallholder Sale on Saturday December 1, with a number of special offers. You can find a full list of these here .

This market is free and you can get both gifts and Christmas decorations. A list of products typically found at the market can be viewed here . Decorations will include wreaths, table centre-pieces, candles, handmade stockings and advent calendars. You can even get a live Christmas tree from St Nicholas Trees or order a personalised Christmas bauble. Christmas food like cakes, gingerbread houses, mince tarts, puddings, shortbread, party dips, farmhouse cheeses, olives and more will also be available.
