Legend has it that the Cooroy Christmas Tree is the absolute best on the Sunshine Coast! If you've missed it in the past, now is your opportunity to visit the special little town of Cooroy, meet the very friendly locals, enjoy some good old-fashioned hinterland hospitality and….celebrate Christmas in Cooroy!
We all love tradition and Cooroy is no exception, giving us a weekend of sensational Christmas festivities - a programme that will light up this little hinterland town. The festivities begin with the lighting up of Cooroy's Studio Steel Christmas Tree on Friday 1 December at 6.45pm. Be part of the celebrations when the most beautiful tree in the region lights up. You'll have to wrap up as snow is in the forecast!
The lighting of this spectacular tree will be accompanied by music from the Four Corners Quartet amidst flurries of snow.
The main Christmas in Cooroy events start on Saturday afternoon in and around Apex Park. Oh my jingles, there is so much fantastic Christmassy entertainment, I barely know where to start. I'll start with the programme (times are all subject to confirmation) and then embroider on each to give you an inkling of how much fun is happening in Cooroy.
🎅🏻 4.00pm - All the Christmas fun begins, which includes:
🎅🏻 4.00pm to 8.00pm
Free Rides and Entertainment - sponsored by The Cooroy Rag
Christmas in Cooroy is all about community and family and thanks to the generosity of The Cooroy Rag, many of the rides located on the grass area opposite the Cooroy Library are FREE for the children. There's something for all ages to enjoy - from Jumping Castles to the Giant Slide and the more laid-back T-Cup roundabout (my style of fun!), plus a foam pit (sponsored by Cooroy Legal Centre).
Children can get up close and personal at the Animal Farm Petting Zoo
The children will be able to get up close and personal to the animals at the Animal Farm Petting Zoo (sponsored by John Madill Toyota); and the Wheelie Cool Mini 4WD Jeeps (sponsored by Madill Holden) will be available for the children to test their driving skills.
With all the fun and excitement of the free rides, The Leather Doctor and Fiona Winter Realty are ensuring that little tummies don't grumble, by providing FREE popcorn and ice-cream for everyone. Plus…there will be food, drinks and sideshows!
Santa Sack Races - sponsored by Cooroy Fish 'n' Chips
Oh my gosh, does this take me back to my childhood - not that I was ever very good at it, but sack races sure are fun! The Christmas in Cooroy festival starts with the Cooroy Fish 'n' Chips Santa Sack Races, where every child who participates wins a prize! Make sure you are at the starting line opposite the Cooroy Library at 4.00pm.
Everybody loves having their face painted! Do you want to look like your favourite Super Hero or get a temporary tattoo design? Just ask one of the talented Face Painters/Body Art artists to give you a make-over. Thanks to the generosity of SPV Accounting, the Face Painting is totally FREE!
Noosa to Hinterland Plumbing Group Great Santa Race
Gather near, gather from afar, this is the race you wouldn't want to miss! Gather along Maple Street to watch the Noosa to Hinterland Plumbing Group Great Santa Race where dozens of Santa-suit clad runners make the three hundred metre sprint to the top of Maple Street. All proceeds from the Great Santa Race are donated to the Leukaemia Foundation.
The Bendigo Bank Street Parade is one of the Christmas in Cooroy's highlights. The Parade starts at 5.00pm and winds its way along Maple Street and back down again (I told you Cooroy is a dinky little town). Watch in awe as forty floats from local businesses and community groups parade down the street, competing for the coveted Best Float Award! The theme for the Bendigo Bank Street Parade 2017 is "Stories, Books and Authors". If you are interested in participating in the Parade, please download a Parade entry form here and the Parade guidelines are available here.
Floats, costumes, brightly-coloured decorations and….may be even a few treats, the Street Parade is always a crowd favourite.
After the Bendigo Bank Street Parade, head back to Apex Park for:
The Shed at Cooroy and Cooroy Computers East Versus West Tug-of-War
The ever-popular East versus West Tug-of-War competition starts just after the Parade in Apex Park. The Shed at Cooroy is putting up an East side team against Cooroy Computers West side. The East side tuggers have a strong list of wins under their belt, but who do you think will win this year? Come prepared, you might just get 'roped in'!
Christmas in Cooroy's very own jolly ol' man in red, Santa, arrives at Apex Park, to chat to the children of Cooroy and give them all a sweet treat, sponsored by Gelignite Jacks. Go and say 'hello' to Santa and get a memorable family photo taken plus a small gift.
The Bendigo Bank Street Parade winner will be announced
At 7.15 the Cooroy night sky will be lit up with a magical firework display, courtesy of Club Cooroy RSL - a display having proven to be the envy of many similar celebrations on the Sunshine Coast.
Drawing of the Mower and ATV $3000 STIHL products raffle
The Cooroy Supa IGA stage in Apex Park will have live entertainment throughout the night with Pineapple Crush, Noosa Concert Band and Smokin Mirrors. The local Cooroy choir will be singing sing-along Christmas carols too.
The free rides will finish by 8.00pm but the entertainment will continue until 10.30pm.
All this fabulous Christmas entertainment and you won't have to open your wallet, unless you need to buy some food or do a spot of Christmas shopping at the market stalls.
What a weekend of Christmas festivities in Cooroy! So, whether you're a local or from out-yonder planning to visit the hospitable little town of Cooroy specifically for their Christmas in Cooroy celebrations, why not make a weekend of it.
All the decorations will be installed at the end of November by the ever-growing band of volunteer Elves and will keep Cooroy's star shining bright until the first weekend in January 2018 – make sure you don't miss It!
