Love him or loathe him (I fall firmly in the love category) no-one can deny that Darryn Lyons, the 95th Mayor of Geelong, has done exactly what he said he would. He has brought the magic of Christmas back to central Geelong.

It doesn't matter which way your turn, from the flags on nearly every road that leads into town, to the city streetscapes, it leaves no doubt in your mind that it's Christmas.

There are a few highlights not to be missed, with the first being the giant floating Christmas tree which shimmers in the daytime sun and lights up every night with an array of changing colours. You can even enjoy the show drink in hand at one of the many bars and restaurants lining the waterfront. It's being touted as the 'The largest outdoor tree in Australia' by Central Geelong and is the heart of our beautiful towns Christmas revival.

But the real show stopper is the Christmas projections onto City Hall, Gheringhap Street where the front of the building brings Christmas images to life in a spectacular light show. Both activities start at 8.30 at night so once you have indulged in a meal with a view out over our tree and the bay, you can stretch the legs with stroll up to the light show.

Geelong has delved so far into the spirit of the season that there is even a 'Christmas Trail' you can do. The map is on display in town but you can download and print your own copy from the central Geelong website and it includes everything from a Giant snow globe you can have your photo taken inside to waterfront activities to the 'Fridays after Work' program which is focused on bringing the streets of Geelong back to life through the outdoor gathering of friends for food, drinks and entertainment.

It is a novelty to have the CBD so alive, after many years of disappearing small business and empty shop fronts so I have been truly glad to have this opportunity to embrace the 'Magic of Christmas' in Geelong.
