With the acquisition of a parcel of land between Jeffcott Street and Palmer Place, the foundation stone of
Christ Church North Adelaide was laid. The church was consecrated and opened in December 1849. It is said to be the most remarkable sanctuary at that time with its exquisite stained glass windows and polished cedar fittings.
The church's significance as the former Pro-Cathedral can be seen in the continuity of Bishop Short's bishop chair. This piece of furniture originated in England and represents the place of the bishop within the Christian community.
The pipe organ was installed approximately 24 years later. It comprises 2,300 pipes, 43 speaking stops, 3 manuals and a pedal board. The sound quality is great, and you can experience its beauty firsthand through various performances held during the year.
