'Go outside and play' my mother used to always say in response to our whining 'what's there to do?' Growing up in the country must've been a real challenge for her, the long summer holidays must've seemed like an eternity! We had a creek nearby so catching an occasional catfish was a treat; hopscotch on the back cement was my favourite; or helping her in the kitchen when she cooked the family's cakes and biscuits for the week always ended in a fight over who got to lick the bowl. These days I love it when I pass by a playground and see kids exploring their 'design'; there'll be the quiet ones, sitting, comparing marbles or sharing secrets, the active ones chasing each other, the ones that as soon as they stand still have to start doing hand-stands or cart-wheels, and yet others who just have to play a sport - give them a bat and ball of any shape or size and they're happy. Whatever activity you choose, and there's so many to choose from, they'll be happy little Vegemites if you can match the child to their design, and so much fun finding out what that may be. Here are a few ideas:-

HEAD TO THE BEACH - it's the most obvious and often the first thing we do around here. It's simple and fun, especially when most of our beaches have wading ocean pools and shady playgrounds; all you need is an umbrella, bucket and spade. Then there's the more organised 'weekend nippers', where children of all ages learn about surf safety, confidence in the water, and respect for the ocean. The older teens will learn the skills involved in life-saving, such as first-aid. They make new friends and are challenged in a safe environment with plenty of mentoring adults around to supervise. If your child loves water, or even if they're scared of waves, this is a great opportunity to learn water skills that will last them a life-time. If you'd like more information about what's involved, click here .

Bricks 4 Kidz - run extraordinary LEGO workshops where children learn to build unique creations in a safe non-competitive environment. Themes such as 'Space', or 'Superheroes' engage their creativity, and there are advanced robotics classes where they learn how to build a motorised model. Classes are run over 1 or 2 days, have no more than 8 children per teacher, and are perfect for 5 - 12 year-olds. For more information click here .

Bunnings Workshops - 'DIY Kids' run every Saturday and Sunday. The helpful staff at Bunnings make great teachers and your littlies will learn how to make a hobby-horse, a bookmark, a bird-feeder, a kite, and gifts for Mother's and Father's Day, to name just a few of their nifty craft ideas. Check your local store for times and more information, click here

Your Local Council or Library - will have a list of day-long activities to challenge and entertain children, and many of them are free. At Mona Vale Library January 17th 'the search for the best Ghost Story' will be on. It will be silly-spooky and great fun for 5 - 12 year-olds. On 23 January the 'Reptile Romp' will give children the chance to meet some scaly-crawly friends. And on 25th January a 'Circus Workshop' will give children the chance to learn skills like juggling, clowning and acrobatics. Click here to see what else is on.
Coastal Environment Centre, Narrabeen - From pre-schoolers through to late teens, this epicentre of knowledge is a fountain of information for all things marine and environmental. Qualified staff lead children in 13 different workshops such as rock platform rambling, snakes and spiders safety-awareness, play 'Marine Biologist' for a day, how to do a spot of bird-watching, and even learn how hot does it have to be to cook an egg or make a volcano? The staff here are highly qualified, thoroughly engaging and make learning heaps of fun; whatever age your children are, they'll be begging to come back for more. For more information, click here .

Sydney Art Space - painting, drawing, stitching, clay hand building, jewellery making, and 3D sculpture are just a sample of what's on the long itinerary of workshops through the school holidays at this northern beaches creative centre. There are half-day and full-day workshops, after-school courses, children's Saturday courses, and even ones the adults can join in too. They cater to a wide range of ages for both children and adults, including pre-schoolers. Times and prices vary so click here for more info.

And flag all these websites as all the organisations run children's activities during every school holidays, not just the summer ones. So much fun to be had, so many things to learn and do, who was it that sang 'I see trees of green, red roses too,....and I think to myself what a wonderful world'. Happy Holidays everyone
