A divinely decadent coffee and dessert bar
Dessert bars are becoming very popular in Adelaide for afternoon tea and late night venues with friends. Chocolatree in North Adelaide is a small venue with a big heart that is sure to please lovers of chocolate.

As you enter the convenient location on O'Connell Street, North Adelaide, the front section is only small with a comfy sofa by the window for a group of friends. There are also intimate tables for two in the main cafe but it is out in the backyard where most people gather. This is a large roof covered space with many tables and chairs suitable for quiet conversations or large after-dinner groups. The venue is open until 11pm and many people drop in after dinner or an evening stroll around the neighbourhood. Supper here after a movie at the Piccadilly Cinema further up the road would be ideal. If the night is a little chilly, grab one of the blankets in the hallway as you go to cover your legs.

This dessert bar has a huge menu in two parts. The drinks menu and the many food options. There is a small all day brunch menu for those not wanting anything sweet. This includes sandwich type toastie offerings such as bruschetta. Unfortunately, I saw no gluten-free options on any of the printed menus. There are many dessert options such as waffles, crepes, and old-time favourites such as sticky date pudding. There is a vegan sago pudding made with coconut milk. There is a good selection of sundaes and the way out freak shakes which are a meal in themselves.

The drinks menu is large with every type of barista made coffee. There are also some non or low caffeine choices for a late night such as matcha latte and turmeric latte. Hot chocolate is a specialty here and is made with top quality Belgian chocolate buds in a choice of dark, milk or white.
Other special drinks are frappes, milkshakes and freshly made juices. Owner Ali supports local business with his choice of expertly roasted, Forza beans from the famous Forza Continental Deli in Underdale. Ali reckons this is the best coffee in Adelaide. Ali is a seasoned barista and my companion said his flat white was the best coffee he has had in a long time. My matcha latte warmed my soul and was just what I needed on a cold winter's day.
If you do not want a big dessert, you can try some of the handmade chocolate treats or fudge to accompany your beverage. There are also some freshly made slices in the cabinet at the front counter. Those on a gluten-free diet have some choices here for afternoon tea or after dinner dessert. You can even pop in here and buy some packaged chocolate almonds or other treats. Perfect if visiting someone in the hospital nearby.
