Nestled in the sandhills between Port Elliot and Hayborough is a recently refurbished building that hosts the Chiton Rocks Surf Life Saving Club. It's a hive of activity on summer weekends with beach patrols, surf safety practices and training activities. As it happens, the building also hosts a less strenuous activity - lunch.
The opens for meals from Thursday till Sunday. If you prefer a smaller snack, there's good coffee, a selection of cakes and drinks from the bar on offer. The stunning views are a bonus.
A table next to the window is the ultimate prize location but views to the Southern Ocean are visible from everywhere in the upstairs cafe.
Don't expect to find the typical sports club menu of nuggets, chips and burgers here. The cuisine is creative, seasonal and, importantly, freshly made on site. Okay, you can order a burger if that's your thing but it's likely to be of the gourmet beef brisket variety with house-made relish and onion rings. And if you must order nuggets for your children, you'll find them accompanied by fresh garden salad. And followed by house-made Magnum ice-cream as part of the deal.
A specials board, near the bar, promotes seasonal salad and seafood treats.
The main menu changes with the seasons but you will currently find spring and summer specialities along the lines of zucchini flowers or braised beef cheek with truffle snowpeas and a wild mushroom sauce.
The standard, sports club favourite dish, salt and pepper squid, comes with a fresh salad dressed in honey and wattleseed. Flavours are paramount here and why shouldn't they be?
Desserts are made on-site and are simply too tempting for a mere mortal to resist.
The kitchen is staffed by a team of professionals, including creative chef Dan, while the bar is run by keen surf-club volunteers. The service is good, the food is excellent and the views are spectacular so there's really nothing not to like at the .
