Summary
Good Morning, China
Steamed Cabbage Dumplings
(BaiCai Jiaozi)
The jiaozi is the shape of an old Chinese gold ingot, meaning for every dumpling you eat, you'll get lucky and may get rich!
Steamed Brown Sugar-Filled Triangle Buns
(Hongtang Sanjiao)
According to Chinese medicine, hongtong is said to be an elixir for many ailments from simple annoyances like headaches, similar to what we have become accustomed to believing about dark chocolate and red wine. Brown sugar honey buns are therefore an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, pain reliever and cholesterol killer all in one!
You'll Like This, We Promise
Stinky Tofu
(Chou Doufu)
Stinky Tofu is not for everyone. It can be as divisive as cilantro or yellow mustard. One either loves it or hates it. Since, also like aged cheeses, the odor can be overwhelming when the taste can be divine.
Now That's One Express Panda
(Fried "Miscellany" Rice - Fried "Miscellany" Noodles)
(Zasiu Ciaofan - Zasiu Ciaonia)
Homemade fried rice and noodles can be equally delicious if you approach this meal as a fridge clean-out and swap out ingredients too.
Egg-Drop Soup
(Danhua Tang)
This recipe checks the box of Chinese nutrition. In lore, soup should be part of every meal to aid in digestion. At the very least, soup during breakfast gets the body going in the right direction. The idea of breakfast being the most important meal is universal!
Opinion
If you are a Chinese food fan, save yourself some money and buy this book.
My favorite recipe is Fried "Miscellany" Rice. To me, I call such a recipe "Everything-But-The- Kitchen-Sink Fried Rice". A friend even gave me a tip to use peanut butter in fried rice!
I give this cookbook a
5-star rating.
